Statement from our Chapter:
Here at UC Berkeley Young Americans for Liberty, we were appalled by the murder of George Floyd, a black man who was arrested for a non-violent crime and was killed by police officer. This death is a horrifying tragedy and has rightfully outraged people across the country and internationally. We at UCB YAL condemn the officer’s use of disproportionate force and the utter lack of accountability of the Minneapolis Police.
This act of injustice highlights a fundamental issue with law enforcement across this country, and if we do not take action, more innocent civilians will fall to police. We must exercise our right to protest and demand better regulation over our law enforcement officers. There are tangible policies that can be implemented to ensure that this tragedy does not occur again. These include ending Qualified Immunity, mandating bodycams , and stopping no-knock raids. If liberty warriors stand together and demand these policies we can affect real change.
We must also stand united against violence. Rioters breaking shop windows, robbing from stores, and attacking civilians are co-opting the protests to commit crimes. These individuals are harming our message and do not believe in property rights, a fundamental principle of liberty.
We must continue putting pressure on police and politicians to ensure that no more innocent civilians are killed by authoritarians. We must also fight for racial equality and resist injustice from those who we are supposed to trust.
