Here is a template another concerned parent and citizen created for you to complete and send to BUSD and Matthew Turner. Even if you don’t have a child going there, or even have a child at all. Send it in.
Subject: Parental Concern Regarding Classroom Assignment at Matthew Turner Elementary
Dear Mr. Slater and BUSD Administration,
I am writing as a concerned parent of a student currently enrolled at Matthew Turner Elementary. I recently became aware that Brandy Shelton has been assigned to teach fourth grade this coming school year.
Given the highly publicized criminal allegations and legal proceedings involving her husband, Matthew Shelton—who was formerly employed by BUSD and is facing multiple charges related to child sexual abuse—I find myself extremely concerned about the decision to place Mrs. Shelton in direct contact with students at this time.
While I understand that Mrs. Shelton herself has not been publicly charged with a crime, the optics and circumstances surrounding this situation understandably create significant discomfort and concern among families. As a parent, I am deeply committed to ensuring a safe and trauma-informed environment for all students, and I believe that assigning Mrs. Shelton to a classroom under these conditions risks undermining community trust and student wellbeing.
I respectfully request that the district reconsider this placement until such time as all concerns surrounding her proximity to the ongoing case and any related mandated reporter obligations have been thoroughly reviewed and addressed transparently. At the very least, I would appreciate the opportunity to have my child assigned to a different classroom.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I hope you will prioritize the safety, emotional wellbeing, and confidence of the families who entrust BUSD with our children’s care and education.
