The Belmar Environmental Commission established the Silver Lake Subcommittee in January of 2024 to provide a forum for focused community collaboration to protect and develop Belmar’s natural resources at Silver Lake. As an extension of the BEC, the Subcommittee’s mission is to recommend policies and initiatives to better manage Silver Lake’s water quality, health and environmental appearance, and to restore, protect and preserve the flora, fauna and marine life in Silver Lake.
Goals:
1) Research and describe the lake’s health issues and ecological imbalances,
2) Seek evidence-based recommendations from coastal lake experts to guide their actions,
3) Secure funding and resources for long-term solutions that address the root causes of the lake’s health issues,
4) Create a sustainable environment where aquatic plants, shoreline vegetation, fish and wildlife can thrive for years to come

It's best to chop up and leave a thin layer of leaves in the grass. Rake excess amounts into a landscape bed or garden.

Keep ducks healthy by letting them forage for their own food. Their natural diet includes worms, slugs, insects, snails, fish, plants, crustaceans, and more. Bread is like junk food for ducks, geese and other birds, and too much of it can lead to excessive weight and malnutrition as well as many other problems.

How does your household dispose of plastic film? Unfortunately, most communities don’t include plastic film in their recycling program because collection is expensive and complicated.

But Belmar residents have options we can feel good about!

For example, meet the Hayner sisters! Belmar locals Clare and Sharon collect plastic wrap for their niece who has so far recycled plastic trash to create FOUR benches! (Details about the Trex bench program in the comments.) If you’d like to deliver your plastic to the Hayner sisters (like I do!), send us a PM and we will connect you.

Other collection locations: Shoprite and Target on Route 35 in Wall; Wegman's on 35 in Ocean; Lewis Street Recycling Yard in Eatontown between 7 am and 2 pm.

Examples of plastic film accepted: bathroom tissue and paper towel packaging plastic wrap, plastic wrap on cases of bottled water/soda, bread bags, dry cleaner bags, newspaper bags, Amazon mailer "envelopes", etc.

As I sit on my porch to begin to write, I hear the rattle of a trailer followed by two noisy gas powered engines starting up. This will be the beginning of about two hours of noise and fumes here...

Keep an eye out for these stunners as they pass through Belmar during migration. Pictured here are the Rose-Breasted Grosbeak and a Baltimore Oriole. What have you seen at your feeders?
