Welcome back to school! I’m wishing students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe, successful, and fun school year. In Lansing we fought hard to protect universal breakfast and lunch so every public school student can focus on learning instead of an empty stomach.

You should also be aware that this year, a new law goes into place that puts limits on cell phone use during the school day. Districts must have policies that keep wireless devices from becoming distractions during instructional time, while allowing exceptions for emergencies, medical needs, special education accommodations, and certain academic uses.

Too often, we hear about people incarcerated in Michigan not receiving the basic healthcare, privacy, disability accommodations, and safe conditions they deserve while in state custody.

That’s why this week, I introduced two bills to establish clear standards for medical, dental, optical, mental health, disability, and medical privacy protections in Michigan’s correctional facilities. These bills protect basic human dignity while preserving MDOC’s ability to maintain safety and security.

Being incarcerated should never mean being denied basic standards of care and dignity. Michigan must hold itself to a higher standard.

As Michigan continues to see proposals for large-scale data centers, local governments are being asked to make decisions about projects that can have significant impacts on surrounding communities.

Before those decisions are made, communities should have access to the information they need to understand the potential impacts, including thermal impacts, and the demands these facilities can place on local infrastructure.

That’s why today I introduced legislation to give local governments and residents greater transparency and better information when considering large-scale data center development.

These bills would make sure that local municipalities have access to key information before making decisions that may affect residents, the environment, infrastructure, and the surrounding communities.

Communities should not have to approve a project first and find out its impacts later.

I've been thinking a lot lately about something bigger than any one issue or election.

Somewhere along the way, we've started treating disagreement as proof that someone has bad motives or that they are attacking someone's integrity. If someone sees an issue differently, we too often assume they're corrupt, uninformed, or simply don't care.

I don't believe that's a healthy path.

Through the years, some of the best decisions I've been a part of came from asking hard questions, listening to answers I didn't expect, and being willing to change my thinking when the facts led me there.

I've also learned that asking difficult questions isn't the same as attacking people. Good questions make us think. They make our ideas stronger. Sometimes they even change the outcome.

We don't have to agree on everything. We never will. But we should be able to assume that most people are trying to make the best decisions they can with the information and experiences they have.

Compassion and curiosity are stronger than contempt. Listening isn't a weakness, and changing your mind when the facts change isn't surrender.

I've come to believe that good judgment begins with good questions. Questions asked with humility, questions asked with courage, and questions asked because we're genuinely trying to understand instead of just trying to win.

If we can get back to giving each other the benefit of the doubt, being respectful, asking better questions, and focusing on solving problems for our communities instead of winning arguments, I think we'll all be better for it.

That's the kind of politics and the kind of community I want to help build.

This is the first election cycle in a long time where my own name isn't on the ballot, and I'm excited to support Shannon Dare Wayne for State Representative in District 31.
