Yesterday afternoon, Senator Darrin Camilleri and I joined Commissioner Al Wilson’s Coffee Hour at Wayne County Community College District to hear directly from residents about the issues impacting our community.
I always appreciate opportunities like this to listen, answer questions, and have meaningful conversations with the people we represent.

Another woman has reportedly died while in state custody at Michigan’s only women’s prison. This death demands accountability, transparency, and a full review of what is happening inside this facility.

As Vice Chair of the House Oversight Committee, I do not believe these repeated incidents can continue to be treated as isolated cases.

Over the past several months, lawmakers, advocates, former employees, incarcerated women, and families have raised serious concerns about medical care, environmental conditions, and systemic failures at the Huron Valley Women’s Correctional Facility. Those concerns deserve answers.

No matter why someone is incarcerated, the state has a responsibility to ensure they are treated with dignity and provided safe conditions and adequate medical care while in custody.

Incarceration does not absolve the state of its responsibility to protect.

I will continue pushing for answers and meaningful oversight into this facility.

This week I introduced a bill to prohibit ex parte requests for data center development. As you may know, the hyperscale data center in Saline Twp requested, and was granted, an ex parte request which meant there were no public hearings about the community and environmental concerns the facility would bring. This legislation would require future cases to be heard in a contested manner at the MPSC to ensure residents have the opportunity to weigh into the project.
