⚠️ FLOOD WATCH & HEAVY RAIN SAFETY NOTICE ⚠️

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Logan County effective today, May 26 at 1:44 PM through Wednesday, May 28 at 2:00 AM due to the potential for additional heavy rainfall across the area.

The City of Bellefontaine has already experienced significant rainfall resulting in localized flooding and high water in several areas. While water has receded and in continuing to recede in many locations, additional rain remains in the forecast and conditions can change quickly.

Please use extreme caution and remember:

🚫 NEVER drive through standing or moving water.
Just a small amount of water can stall a vehicle or wash it off the roadway. If you encounter high water, TURN AROUND — DON’T DROWN.

Residents can also help reduce localized drainage issues by:

✅ Clearing leaves, sticks, and debris away from nearby catch basins and storm drains
✅ Securing outdoor items that could wash into drainage systems
✅ Monitoring sump pumps and downspouts to ensure they are functioning properly
✅ Avoiding placing grass clippings or debris in streets or ditches

If you encounter an emergency situation, please call 911. For non-emergency flooding, street, or drainage concerns, please contact the Mayor’s Office.

Please stay alert, stay safe, and continue to monitor local weather updates throughout the next several days.

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy each and every day, and their legacy will never be forgotten.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all who have served and to the families who continue to carry the weight of that sacrifice. On this Memorial Day, we stand united in remembrance, respect, and appreciation for our nation’s heroes.

“We will always remember.” 🇺🇸

Today, our members participated in hands-on Hazardous Materials training with other local departments including Bokescreek Fire/EMS Dept, Bellefontaine Fire Department, and Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department, Ohio focused on decontamination operations and proper decon corridor setup. Crews reviewed and practiced multiple decon methods, including emergency decon, technical decon, and mass decon procedures while emphasizing responder safety, scene control, and patient care.

Training also covered proper equipment placement, entry and exit control points, water management, contamination reduction techniques, and teamwork during high-risk incidents. Continuous training like this ensures our personnel remain prepared to safely and effectively respond to hazardous materials emergencies in our community.

[5:26 AM] Showers and storms will develop and move southeast through the area tonight. There is the potential for large hail and damaging winds as well as an isolated tornado. The greatest chance for severe weather will be near and north of Interstate 70. In addition, locally heavy rainfall may occur, which could lead to instances of flooding.

As you change your clocks one hour ahead, this weekend, we want to remind you to also check the following:

1. Test your smoke alarm by pressing the "Test" button to ensure it sounds.

2. Check the date of manufacture on the back of your smoke alarm. If it's 8 - 10 years old, it's at the end of its lifespan and needs to be replaced.

3. Run your vacuum over the grill to remove any dust to eliminate potential false activations.

4. Remember that a "chirp" every 60 seconds is your unit telling you that the batteries are low and need to be changed.

5. A series of three beeps followed by short pauses is your unit telling you that it detects smoke and you need to get out of the house.

BFD wishes everyone a safe and happy Spring season!
