𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐄𝐃 Peaine and St. James in talks to split up their historic joint ownership of properties. For example, Peaine would fully own Iron Ore Bay, and St James would own the public beach and marinas.

This is a fairly large topic that could affect taxes and maintenance burdens, as well as community investment in the properties shifting from truly shared community resources. These are public spaces so access would not change, but why is this at all necessary?

There again is no information publicly available regarding the questions being asked or the justifications behind this push to separate community property.

Update: This meeting is cancelled due to a lack of a quorum and will be rescheduled.

Monday May 18th is a Special Meeting with Peaine Board of Trustees and St. James Board of Trustees. Details in the attached pic!

There is also a big thank you to Governor Whitmer for pressing the issue of disaster relief after 2 denials. Given that Great Lakes Energy is a cooperative, if FEMA did not provide relief funds, the members/customers of GLE would have to foot the bill for infrastructure fixes incurred by the utility due to the storm. GLE raised rates in November 2025 to begin paying down the expenses from the storm. Sadly even if GLE receives funding, rates will not decrease in the short term, but they may stay raised for a shorter period than they otherwise might have been.

Wonderful news that the communities impacted by the storm last year can rely on the funds now, though. We'll all still be feeling the GLE rate increase, but at least our neighbors and community were reimbursed for their great work keeping the island running.

Peaine Proposed Budget draft for meeting tomorrow at 1pm.

There's no mention of what millage rate is proposed if any for property taxes. Also unclear if $150k of the grants in Adopted 2025 were not granted to the township. I'll email for clarification. Looks like the grants section is currently incorrect in general, those values are from 2024-2025 budget, not 2025-2026.

Included are removing HR budgeting of $2500/yr and increasing the budget for an assistant supervisor from $750/yr to $3000/yr. Office supplies increasing from $1200 to $6000.
