ICE HUNGER STRIKE LEADER RELEASED AFTER 8 MONTHS IN DETENTION

Martin Soto is finally home with his wife and children after spending eight months in ICE custody. Soto was detained in February while reportedly out buying diapers for his two young children. While held at Delaney Hall in Newark, he helped lead a hunger and labor strike involving roughly 300 detainees protesting conditions inside the facility. His wife says he was later transferred to the Elizabeth Detention Center and placed in solitary confinement in retaliation for his role in the strike.

Soto’s wife, Gabriela, said his release came after New Jersey signed off on a new visa certification. Rep. Nellie Pou, whose office had pushed for his release for months, said Soto was “targeted and mistreated” and that his release “should have happened months ago.” After eight months of detention, separation and a fight that reached members of Congress, Martin Soto is finally reunited with his family.
