Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail

Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail The continued success of the Trail is made possible through community partnerships, local government participation, and private support.

The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail (FSMT) was founded in 2012, by community-minded leaders, as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Beaufort County by advocating for the development, enhancements and maintenance of the Spanish Moss Trail. The FSMT sustainable partnerships and investors include: Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority, Beaufort County, J

ames M. Cox Foundation, BlueCross BlueShield of SC, City of Beaufort, Town of Port Royal, Beaufort Memorial Hospital, private foundations, and a large network of individuals and businesses. Soon after the FSMT was formed, it partnered with the PATH Foundation of Atlanta, an organization with 25 years of experience building more than 200 miles of trails in the greater Atlanta area. PATH developed a 10-Phase Master Plan for the 14-mile long, beautifully landscaped, 12-foot wide concrete Spanish Moss Trail – designed for the enjoyment of bikers, runners, walkers, fishers, and nature enthusiasts of all stages of life. When the Master Plan is fully implemented, the Trail will connect Port Royal, Beaufort, Burton, Grays Hill and Seabrook – through neighborhoods, parks, water and marsh views, nature preserves, cultural features, historic sites and businesses for recreation, transportation and conservation purposes.

The Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail are pleased to announce that the Spanish Moss Trail’s Port Royal Crossing Project is now open for public enjoyment. Beaufort County has completed this highly-anticipated section that extends the Trail across Ribaut Road to Ritter Circle. This important section allows Trail users to connect to the Town of Port Royal's quieter street grid until the future extension of the Trail formally connects to the Sands Beach.

Please note that while this new section is open to the public, the Town of Port Royal is still completing the resurfacing of the old driveway at Ritter Circle. While this work is underway, Trail users should use caution (if on a bike, you will want to walk this gravel area until it is paved). In addition, the Town of Port Royal Police are currently using their radars to slow traffic down at this new crossing where there is a new HAWK signal. Their presence will be there for a couple of weeks to help raise awareness and change the speed behavior of drivers along this corridor.

We are pleased to announce that 22 new trees have been replanted after Dominion Energy's required removal of our Hermitage/Fripp Street Tree Grove. We appreciate all who worked hard to advocate for the best possible outcome -- our Gift of a Tree donors, City of Beaufort Leadership and Public Works, our master arborist Michael Murphy, our State representatives, Dominion's leadership, and especially to the staff and board of the Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail who have worked for 16 months on this solution. We know these new trees will beautify the Trail for generations to come. What a beautiful weekend to get out on the Trail!

“Ten miles of the planned 16 have been built, so there’s still a long way to go,” Sissy points out. But the work is paying off. “More than a quarter of those enjoying the Spanish Moss Trail are visitors to the area, helping fuel the economy. This is a big deal, and has been an intentional strategy by our nonprofit for more than a decade.”
