Training Day Success! 🔥
This weekend our team stepped into a simulated house‑fire environment — a smoke‑filled room designed to mirror the chaos, and zero‑visibility conditions of a real emergency.

Our men & women worked through search‑and‑rescue drills with focus, determination, and teamwork, sharpening the skills that save lives when seconds matter.

Proud of their hard work, their commitment to safety, and their dedication to being ready for whatever comes next.

👨‍🚒💪 Training like this isn’t easy — but it’s how we stay prepared!

🚨 Ice Rescue on Saginaw Bay – Fairhaven Township 🚨

This morning (February 20, 2026) around 8:30 a.m., Huron Central Dispatch received a 911 call from a lone fisherman approximately 1.5 miles offshore of Rose Island in Fairhaven Township.

The fisherman had broken through the ice while riding his ATV. Although the water was around waist deep and he was not injured, he was unable to climb out because the surrounding ice would not support his weight.

He made the right decision by calling 911.

The fisherman returned to his ATV and sat on it to keep as much of his body out of the water as possible while waiting for help. He remained partially submerged for approximately 45 minutes in rainy conditions.

Caseville Fire Department was dispatched to tow the Sheriff’s Office airboat to the scene. Deputies, assisted by a Fairhaven Township firefighter, responded and pulled alongside the fisherman in the water, safely bringing him onto the airboat.

He was treated for mild hypothermia and placed into a hypothermic rescue suit before being transported back to shore. The Caro-area man was then turned over to the Sebewaing Ambulance crew for further medical treatment.

Thankfully, this incident had a positive outcome.

However, just over 8 years ago in that same general area, two fishermen who broke through the ice while riding an ATV in approximately 4 feet of water were not as fortunate. Deputies later located them deceased after they were unable to escape the water. An additional factor was that their initial call for help was made to a friend rather than 911, and the message was not received for hours.

📞 Always call 911 immediately in an emergency.

❄️ This incident is a reminder that ice conditions can never be trusted — even if reports suggest thicknesses of 12 to 18 inches in parts of the Saginaw Bay region. The rescue occurred in open water, away from cattails, which are known to compromise ice. The ice conditions were rough with visible surface water.

Anglers are strongly advised:
Never assume ice is safe
Avoid traveling alone
Carry safety/rescue equipment
Call 911 immediately in an emergency

Also assisting in this morning’s rescue was the Fairhaven Police Department.
