The recent ATF guidance (effective October 9, 2026) is a significant step forward. ATF will no longer enforce NFA registration and prior-approval requirements for suppressors, short-barreled ri**es, short-barreled sh****ns, and certain other items nationwide. This follows the reduction of the associated federal tax to $0 and a related federal court ruling.
Unfortunately, this federal enforcement change does not override Nevada law. Under current Nevada statutes (including NRS 202.275 for SBRs/SBSs and NRS 202.350 for silencers), these items generally remain subject to the traditional NFA process for lawful possession in the state. As a result, we continue to process all NFA items through proper ATF submission (Forms 1 and 4) to ensure full compliance with both federal and Nevada requirements. ATF has confirmed it will continue accepting these applications voluntarily.
We encourage Nevada lawmakers to update state law to align with the ATF’s guidance and the practice already adopted by many other states. Nevadans deserve the same straightforward access that is now available elsewhere.
Vote accordingly this November.
