Hispanic Heritage Month runs Sep 15 through Oct 15, and in California foster care this month lands especially heavy. More than half of the kids in our state’s foster system identify as Latinx or Black. Kids carrying language, faith, food, music, and family stories that don’t pause when a placement changes.
Culturally-competent placement isn’t a nice-to-have. It’s what makes a placement actually feel like home. A kid who hears Spanish at the dinner table. A quinceañera that still happens. A tamalada in December because that’s what abuela always did. Dia de los Mu***os with photos on the mantel, not questions from confused foster parents.
Kinship placement is the gold standard here. When it isn’t possible, the next best thing is a foster family that shares or actively honors the child’s culture, language, and identity.
RBL FFA recruits foster families from every background across San Bernardino and Orange County, and we match placements with culture in mind. Every single time.
If you speak Spanish. If your kitchen already smells like home. If you know what it means to hold onto where you come from, we want to talk to you.
Cultura guardada. Raíces preservadas. Hogar.

Cal Fire’s peak wildfire season in Southern California runs September through November. If you foster in the High Desert or Orange County, your go-bag needs 3 things most families forget. 🔥

1. Court paperwork copies: Placement order, ID copies, medical consent forms. Kept together, not in a filing cabinet you can’t grab in 15 minutes.

2. Two weeks of any prescribed medications: In their original bottles. Foster kids often arrive on prescriptions that are hard to replace mid-crisis.

3. One comfort object per child.** The specific stuffed animal. The specific blanket. The photo they need to sleep. Not a substitute. The actual one.

Add these to whatever you already pack for the rest of the family. And if you aren’t sure what your foster case plan requires during evacuation, call your social worker today, not during a fire.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month. For foster youth, this month isn't abstract. It's a crisis they're statistically living inside every day. 💜

24% of California transition age foster youth have attempted su***de. The rate for their same age peers outside the system is about 2%. 40% have seriously considered it. These numbers come from the Cal YOUTH Study out of UC's Chapin Hall research center. They are not exaggerations.

If you are in crisis right now, or know someone who is, call or text 988. That's the national Su***de and Crisis Lifeline. It's free. It's 24/7. It's staffed by trained counselors.

Foster parents, listen up. Research keeps landing on the same protective factor: one stable, present adult cuts su***de risk in half. Not a therapist. Not a program. A person who keeps showing up.

That person could be you.

DID YOU KNOW⁉️

August is Kids Eat Right Month. And in foster care, food is one of the fastest paths to a child feeling safe. 🍅

For a kid who's been through hell, a meal at the same table, at the same time, made by the same hands isn't a small thing. It's the whole thing. A regulated nervous system starts with a full stomach and a predictable rhythm.

Culturally-familiar food matters even more. When a Latinx kid gets abuela's tacos. When a Black kid gets grandma's greens. When a Southeast Asian kid gets rice at every meal. That's not preference — that's medicine. Trauma-informed foster parents know: ask what they miss, then cook it.

Every RBL FFA family gets trained in food-as-healing. It's one of the quiet things that separates a placement from a home.

Before next week starts remember what you do school matters.

🍎 YOUR BEGINNING DOES NOT DETERMINE YOUR DESTINATION.

Before Steve Jobs became one of the greatest innovators of his generation, he was simply a baby boy who was placed for ADOPTION and raised by Paul and Clara Jobs.

His beginning didn’t define his ending.

And that’s the message I want every young person in foster care to hear as a new school year begins:

You are NOT your circumstances.

Maybe you’ve moved from home to home. Maybe you’ve experienced things other kids don’t understand. Maybe you’re wondering if you’ll ever accomplish anything great.

Don’t let your current chapter convince you that you’ve already seen the ending.

The classroom you’re sitting in today could be the beginning of something extraordinary.

Keep learning. Keep dreaming. Keep creating. Keep going.

You don’t have to know exactly where your life is headed yet.

Your story is still being written. ❤️

Your past may explain where you started—but it does NOT determine where you finish.
