๐Ÿพ Rabies Vaccines Are Required by Law ๐Ÿพ

Just like your vehicle needs insurance and registration, your pet is required to have a current rabies vaccination.

โœ… Dogs, cats, & ferrets (3+ months old) must be vaccinated
โœ… Must be given by a licensed veterinarian
โœ… Must stay current

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Animal Control Officers may ask for proof during any call or investigation.
If proof of a current rabies vaccination cannot be provided, a citation may be issued to bring the situation into compliance.

โœ… In Lamar County, our goal is compliance โ€” not punishment.
๐Ÿ‘‰ If you update your petโ€™s vaccination and provide proof before court, citations can typically be addressed.

๐Ÿฆ In rural Georgia, wildlife exposure is real โ€” and rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Protect your pet. Protect your family. Stay current.

๐Ÿก Reunited with Owner ๐Ÿก

This handsome โ€œfoxโ€ was reported as a roaming dog in a local neighborhood. Thanks to a quick response from Animal Services and a properly registered microchip, we were able to identify his family and return him safely home within minutes.

While stray animals are often transported to the shelter, there are times when a pet simply slips out by accident and can be returned directly home. Thatโ€™s exactly what happened in this case.

Microchips are one of the most effective tools for pet reunification. They provide a permanent form of identification that can help get lost pets back where they belong quickly and safely.

Today was a great reminder that microchips workโ€”and this good boy is back home with his family where he belongs.

๐Ÿพ Rabies Vaccinations โ€“ Itโ€™s the Law in Lamar County ๐Ÿพ

Just like a driver is required to have insurance and registration, pet owners are required by law to keep their animals current on rabies vaccinations.

This isnโ€™t just a recommendation โ€” itโ€™s a legal responsibility designed to protect your pet, your family, and our entire community.

๐Ÿ“Œ What does the law require?
In Lamar County:
โœ… All dogs, cats, and ferrets 3 months of age or older must be vaccinated against rabies
โœ… The vaccine must be administered by a licensed veterinarian
โœ… Vaccinations must remain current

These requirements are outlined in both Lamar County Ordinance and Georgia law.

๐Ÿฆ  Why rabies vaccinations matter
Rabies is not just another illness โ€” it is:
โš ๏ธ Nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear
โš ๏ธ Spread through saliva of infected animals
โš ๏ธ A serious public health risk for both humans and pets

In rural Georgia, wildlife such as:
๐Ÿฆ Raccoons
๐ŸฆŠ Foxes
๐Ÿฆจ Skunks
๐Ÿบ Coyotes

โ€ฆare common carriers of rabies, increasing exposure risks for outdoor pets and even indoor pets that come into contact with wildlife.

๐Ÿค” Did You Know?
A pet without a rabies vaccine that is exposed to a rabid animal may face strict quarantine or euthanasia requirements

Even indoor pets are at risk if wildlife enters your property.

Rabies vaccinations are one of the most effective and affordable ways to prevent a fatal disease

๐Ÿ‘ฎ What to expect from Animal Control
During an interaction โ€” including:
- Nuisance complaints
- Bite cases
- Investigations

Animal Control Officers will ask:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Can you provide proof of a current rabies vaccination?

Acceptable proof includes:
โœ… Rabies tag on the animal
โœ… Veterinary paperwork
โœ… Verification from your vetโ€™s office

โš–๏ธ Compliance vs. Enforcement
If your pet is not currently vaccinated, you may be issued a citation.

However, in Lamar County, our goal is compliance โ€” not punishment.

โœ… If you obtain a rabies vaccination and provide proof before your court date, the citation can typically be dismissed.

We want to help you get your pet protected โ€” not penalize you for fixing the issue.

To help our community stay compliant and protect your pets, we are offering a:

โœ”๏ธ Supports public health in our community
