In recognition of Endangered Species Day!

Did you know that some of the most endangered animals in Wisconsin live quietly beneath the surface of our rivers and streams?

Freshwater mussels are incredible creatures that help keep our water clean by filtering algae, bacteria, and other particles from the water. A single mussel can filter gallons of water each day!

The St. Croix River is home to several rare and endangered mussel species, including the Higgins eye and winged mapleleaf. These species depend on clean water, healthy fish populations, and stable stream habitat to survive.

Unfortunately, pollution, excess sediment, habitat loss, and invasive species threaten these important animals.

Protecting freshwater mussels means protecting the rivers and streams we all depend on for drinking water, recreation, and wildlife habitat.

This Endangered Species Day, celebrate these hidden heroes of our waterways and consider ways you can help:
💧 Reduce runoff from your property
🌱 Plant native vegetation along shorelines
🚫 Prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species
🐟 Support efforts to improve water quality
