Building your “lil” business will teach you a LOT about people. 👀

You’ll tell someone what you’re building, what you’re working toward, and the vision behind it…and get an “Ohhh…” 😏

🚫No questions.
🚫No “How’s it going?”
🚫No “How can I support?”
🚫No share. No referral. Nothing.

But let a company, funder, sponsor, or donor come along and say, “We believe in what you’re doing,” and suddenly that same “lil” business looks a little different. 🙆🏽‍♀️

Funny how outside validation can make people recognize value that was already there.😒

And one of the wildest parts of entrepreneurship is watching people enthusiastically share, promote, and celebrate complete strangers while barely acknowledging what someone they actually KNOW is building.

But here’s what you learn: everybody close to you won’t be part of your support system and everybody in your support system won’t be close to you. 💯

So keep building. Keep making connections. Keep investing. Keep showing up.

Your work doesn’t become valuable when somebody else recognizes it.

It was valuable while you were building it. 🌱🤗

🎉⚖️ A WIN FOR THE PEOPLE — THE AG’S OFFICE SIDED WITH ME! 🙌🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I received the final response to my complaint about the August 11 Baker City Council meeting.

Bottom line: The Attorney General’s Office reviewed BOTH sides and SIDED WITH ME on the two Open Meetings Law issues I raised. ✅

Here it is in plain English 👇🏾

🚫 ISSUE #1: REQUIRED SIGN-IN SHEET
The Council required people to give their name and address before entering the meeting.

⚖️ AG said: You can’t require that. Providing your name and address is VOLUNTARY.

And guess what?! 👀
👏🏾 I attended the very next Council meeting and THERE WAS NO SIGN-IN SHEET! 🙌🏽

✅ That’s progress!

🌐 ISSUE #2: AGENDA NOT POSTED
The August 11 agenda was NOT posted on the City’s website.

The City said it was a “staff error.”

⚖️ AG said: The law’s “technological failure” exception did NOT apply.

➡️ The Council says it will add extra checks to make sure meeting notices are posted on time.

🙄 Blah, blah, blah. We’ll see. 👀

Why am I skeptical?
Because this is NOT the first, second, or TENTH time I’ve seen agendas or minutes posted late — or not posted at all.

Hopefully this time things change. 🤞🏾😏

📝 ISSUE #3: READING THE ORDINANCES
This one was different

📌 I stated IN MY ORIGINAL COMPLAINT that I knew this was NOT an Open Meetings Law violation.

So why did I include it?

Because I wanted it ON THE RECORD. 📝

I have repeatedly raised concerns about the Council not reading ordinances in full as required by Baker’s Home Rule Charter.

Now that citizens no longer have the opportunity to bring up non-agenda items at Council meetings, I wanted the STATE to have a record that this has been an ongoing issue.

⚖️ The AG’s Office said it could only address the Open Meetings Law and could not decide whether the City is following its Home Rule Charter.

👌🏾 No problem. That wasn’t my purpose.

My purpose was simple:
📝 DOCUMENT IT.

And now it’s documented.

Why does this matter? Because hearing a short description of an ordinance is NOT the same as knowing what’s actually in it.

Remember the proposed ordinance that included restrictions on things like changing your own oil or tires in your own yard? 🚗🛞

THAT is why the details matter.

📣 And THAT is why I’m sharing all of this.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AND USE THEM!
❓ Ask questions.
📄 Request records.
✍🏾 Put it in writing.
🗂️ Document EVERYTHING.
⚖️ File the complaint when necessary.
💪🏾 And FOLLOW THROUGH.

I’ve been speaking up about transparency and accountability in Baker, and I’m going to keep doing it.

Will everybody like it? No. 🤷🏾‍♀️
Could there be pushback? Absolutely.
I’ve already experienced what I considered threats and harassment after speaking up — and I documented it. 📝

💪🏾 Still not deterred.
👀 If I see it, I’ll question it.
📝 If there’s a pattern, I’ll document it.
⚖️ If necessary, I’ll challenge it.

👏🏾 KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. USE YOUR VOICE. HOLD YOUR GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABLE.

🌱 When citizens speak up AND follow through, things CAN change.
