AD7KG National Parks on the Air

AD7KG National Parks on the Air ARRL National Parks On The Air Activations by Jed W. Petrovich, AD7KG.

First of all, thanks to everyone who contacted me during this latest activation. The weather conditions couldn't have been better for a mid-November outing. Band conditions were also decent and I worked stations all over the US and Canada. Even had a few DX stations. At the end of about four hours of operating on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, I had 402 contacts in my log.

All QSOs have now been uploaded to LoTW and about half have already matched up for a confirmation. Every effort was made to log each call correctly. However, please let me know if there were any mistakes.I'll be posting some photos and a few more details, so stay tuned.

My fifth activation will take place on Friday, November 11th from Dinosaur National Monument. This unit is in both Utah and Colorado. However, my operating site will be located in Moffat County, Colorado. I hope to be on the air by 18:00 UTC (my Friday morning). However, this will be variable based upon my arrival time.

The weather forecast is for decent weather and light winds. The operating site is about 7,030 ft (2,143m) ASL with nearly an unobstructed views in all directions. Hopefully, the band conditions will also cooperate.

I will likely be starting out on 20m SSB. Depending on the time of day I may be on 40m SSB. I'm also hoping a few kind souls will spot me on the cluster.

Hope to put you in the log from what appears to be a fairly rare county in Colorado and NPOTA MN24.

Bob, WR7Q, and I arrived at Great Basin National Park on Wednesday, October 12th. We were lucky to find two campsites at Lower Lehman Creek campground. (First come, first served... no reservations.) Bob parked his trailer in Site #4 and I set up my operating tent at Site #11. Elevation of the campground is about 7,300 feet (2,225 m) ASL.

Overall, the weather and band conditions were really nice for a Fall outing. However, there were strong winds on Friday and Saturday, which hampered our operation somewhat. Bob logged 220 contacts and I had 534. I worked all US States except Montana, Delaware and Hawaii. I also logged several Canadian Provinces, along with Sweden, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Brazil. As of this post, our effort represents 28% of the contacts made from NP24. (754 out of 2704 QSOs as of 10/24/2016)

Lower Lehman Creek campground was a favorable operating site. Generally, our contacts into the Midwest and East were on 20 meters and stations in the West on 40 meters.

We also took time away from radio to tour Lehman Caves and some of the surrounding sites. This Park is nearly 100 miles from any sizable population centers. The closest town to the Park is Baker, Nevada... population 68. Since our visit was outside of the peak tourist season, Baker establishments were buttoned up for the year. There is an automated fuel station in town, but that was about it. The closest lodging and food was back at the Utah/Nevada border.

The Park Staff members were helpful and friendly. This was due in part to our contact with them prior to our visit.

We had a great time during this activation. Along with the Park Staff, we had some interesting chats with campers and other visitors.

I'm hoping to activate at least one more Entity before the end of the year. Just hope the weather and band conditions hold out for a while.

Returned Saturday evening from Great Basin National Park. Thanks to those who worked us. I'll be posting my log to LoTW soon. More details and photos to follow as time allows.

Bob, WR7Q, and I will be activating Great Basin National Park on Wednesday 12th through Saturday 15th of October. Due to the remote location of this Park, it may not be possible to post updates of our activity while on site. Please watch the spotting cluster. We will ask for operators to spot us if possible. So far the weather and band conditions look favorable.

Our plan is to operate SSB on 20 and 40 meters and have two stations on the air. Please be aware that the propagation to the West may not be favorable because of the high mountains to the west. Wheeler Peak, the tallest peak, is 13,065 ft (3,982m) ASL. Please see this link for more information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheeler_Peak_(Nevada)

Bob, WR7Q, and I had a great outing to the Golden Spike National Historic Site. The weather was really nice and just a light breeze was blowing. The band conditions were not the best and I wondered if I'd be able to make the requisite ten contacts to validate the activation. When it was all over, 108 entries made it into the log.
