We have lost one of the very best people and true public servants. Please join me in mourning the loss of Ms. Fannie Mae Johnson. God bless her and all those she leaves behind. Pray for our community.

The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors offers its deepest condolences to the family of Fannie Johnson following Friday’s tragic news. A true public servant, she gave decades to the community as a former Meridian City Councilwoman and Executive Director of L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen. Her passion for helping those less fortunate and caring for those in need has left an indelible mark on our community, and her loss will be felt by many. We join the family, L.O.V.E.’s Kitchen directors and volunteers and all those touched by Johnson throughout her years of service in mourning her passing.

Solid Waste Amnesty Day to be held Sept. 19

Lauderdale County residents are encouraged to bring their old paint, stale gas, used oil and other hazardous materials for proper disposal at the Solid Waste Amnesty Day.

The event, set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Lauderdale County Road Department, 210 Windmill Drive, is a twice yearly opportunity for those living in the county to get rid of waste that residential garbage service won’t accept. That includes materials like oil, solvents and paint, batteries, tires, electronics and more.

“Disposing of hazardous materials can pose a challenge since it can’t go with regular trash. We want to enable county residents to get rid of hazardous garbage the right way, keep trash off our roads and bridges and improve the look of our county,” said Lauderdale County Solid Waste Enforcement Officer Daniel Mabry. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of Amnesty Day if they’re able.”

Solid Waste Amnesty Day is free for county residents living outside the Meridian city limits. The city of Meridian hosts separate amnesty events throughout the year as well, giving everyone a chance to participate.

Items accepted during Amnesty Day include:
— stale gasoline
— pesticides/herbicides
— solvents
— used oil (limit of five gallons)
— paint
— fertilizer
— appliances
— TVs/computers
— brake fluid
— antifreeze
— sharps
— batteries
— paint thinners
— fluorescent bulbs
— expired medication
— tires (limit of five passenger tires per household)

For more information about Amnesty Day or questions about what can be disposed of contact Lauderdale County Solid Waste Enforcement Officer Daniel Mabry at 601-816-9723.
