Stonewall Action

Stonewall Action It’s time for Austin’s q***r community and our allies to come together and build a better, happier, healthier environment for everyone.

Our rights are under attack and we are being actively erased from our own history. Many in our community are doing good work, but we must go farther. Action was required in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn and action is required right now in Austin. The bricks thrown at Stonewall over 50 years ago must be picked up again.

More than 50 activists from all across Central Texas came out ready to get to work! Just as bricks were thrown at the Stonewall Inn in 1969 to ignite a movement, we now use them to build and organize for our future today.

Thanks to Mercedes Chandler from Camp Callout for joining our launch event and encouraging us to build and support local media that speaks truth to power!

The attacks on our community are numerous, so the work must multiply. Join us on Thursday, 5:30pm at Oilcan Harrys to pick up your brick and get ready for action!

They tried arresting drag queens in 1969 too.

UT can no longer host or fund drag shows on campus, the UT System Board of Regents announced in a statement on Tuesday. The ban follows a formalized ban on drag shows from the Texas A&M System Board of Regents and direction from the Trump administration and Gov. Greg Abbott that requires federal and state agencies to “reject woke gender ideologies.”

The city is shutting down and harassing LGBTQ businesses and attacking trans people in the streets? It's hopeful to see council members speaking out, but we've had supportive local electeds for many years and this sh*t keeps happening.

A statement from myself, Council Member José Velásquez, and Council Member Mike Siegel, District 7, regarding the use of excessive force against a trans woman downtown:

"We have seen an upsetting video shared online and dated March 2nd showing a trans woman being violently thrown to the pavement by an Austin police officer.

We have taken steps to ensure that this excessive use of force is investigated properly and that appropriate action is taken to ensure accountability.

At a time when our LGBTQIA+ community is under continuing attacks from the national and state governments, we must do all we can as a City to ensure that all members of our community are safe.

Thank you to all who have reached out and shared their concern about the safety and dignity of our trans community."

This is why organized effort matters - and we are grateful that Council Member Zohaib "Zo" Qadri, District 9 is stepping up to fight for us. But if those answers are insufficient, we will need to be ready. Join us on March 27 to find out how.

While our State and Federal governments continue to fail our LGBTQIA+ community, Austin doesn’t have to.

Please see my full statement regarding recent incidents involving our q***r community downtown.

👏 Party Politics Are Only Part of the Work 👏

For decades, Stonewall Democrats have fought for LGBTQ rights within the Democratic Party. And while that work is important, the damage being done to democracy and the harm being perpetrated to our community demands more. We will go beyond party – including holding elected Democrats accountable for their (lack) of action.
