Here are the early and absentee votes for Harris and Montgomery Counties put together in a spreadsheet for easier viewing... still waiting on election day numbers. :)

Early voting starts Monday! My earlier posts have talked about by positions on several issues, but today I want to reflect on the last few months so people know where my heart is.

One of the toughest parts of this campaign has been communicating why I think you should trust me with your vote without some folks thinking that I mean to disparage my neighbor who is also running for the same position. Often in our elections people are voting against one candidate more than they are voting for another. Unfortunately, it is also the case in our elections that two people running for the same position are adversaries due to diametrically opposed values and priorities that conflict with each other. I think this is the root of some of the misperceptions, in addition to the fact that when we post on social media, we lose control of the tone of voice that the readers hear in their heads.

At no point have I ever been "against" or "opposed" to my fellow candidate for Position #5. She has valuable perspectives and experiences that I don't have, and I have valuable perspectives and experience that she doesn't have. During the latest candidate form, I don't recall her saying anything that I disagreed with or considered to be problematic. The issue before the voters isn't who is good vs. who is bad, but rather which of those perspectives and experiences fit best with their expectations of a school board trustee.

I'll let her speak to her many positive traits, but for mine it really boils down to my belief that we need a teacher on the school board. It's great that some very caring and highly involved parents volunteer at our schools, and it is also good that trustees take their "Board Walks" to campuses, but it's not the same thing. Compare it to how your house looks and how your kids act when you have guests at home vs. when there aren't any guests in the house. The guests usually don't walk away with a proper understanding of how things normally are for you. While I believe everyone genuinely supports our teachers, the only way anyone can really understand our teachers and the challenges they face is to serve in a public school classroom as the teacher of record. I have.

While I have never been elected to public office, I have spent my entire adult life as a public servant, either as a soldier or as an educator, and often times those duties have overlapped. I hope that the people will allow me to continue this service by electing me to be their representative on the Tomball ISD School Board.

However you cast your ballot, I want to sincerely thank you for participating in our democracy.

It's that time again! I look forward to a positive campaign, productive conversations, and a respectful exchange of ideas with my esteemed neighbor Amanda Bass!

After the last election, I would like to remind everyone that their behavior reflects directly on their candidate. I ask that all of my friends and neighbors who support me be respectful towards Mrs. Bass and her supporters. Should the majority of Tomball ISD voters choose her to represent them in November, she should have all of our full support.

I would also advise that we should all be a little suspicious of anyone who is militantly pro any school board candidate, including me. These people are usually friends and family members of the candidate, and are not objective supporters. They personally benefit one way or another from their friend/relative getting elected, and that's their actual motivation. Some of these people's entire personality is having a brother-in-law on the school board, or being able to call someone when they are mad about how the car-rider line is being run.

I encourage everyone to go the the social media sites of each candidate and see what they each have to say and make up your own minds. Don't be swayed by whoever has the most keyboard warriors shouting everyone else down with untruthful things about people who are only trying to volunteer in the community they love. Also, I encourage everyone, regardless of who you support, not to feed the trolls, as it only fuels them and allows them to grow. Admittedly, I've gotten sucked into responding to trolls a few times during this election cycle myself, so I know it's hard to disengage when you are being genuine and you want to believe others are too.

Lastly, one important lesson from the 2020 and 2022 school board elections should be that the majority of voters don't care about party affiliation when voting for school board. In 2020, local Democratic groups openly supported three candidates, and all three were defeated. In 2022, the Harris County GOP endorsed three candidates, and those three did not win. So rather that spend any more time talking about how I feel about Arctic drilling or NATO expansion, I will stay focused on issues that are within the scope of a school board trustee's purview. For example:

1) Tax money should be spent wisely. We all worked hard for that money, it's not there for nonsense. Top financial priorities are student safety, instructional materials for the classrooms, and training/retaining the best teachers in the world. Invest in kids and invest in teachers.

2) Public schools are about education, not indoctrination. This is something both our neighbors who lean right and our neighbors who lean left have had concerns about, and not without cause. I send my son to school to learn science from certified science teachers, math from certified math teachers, social studies from certified social studies teachers, etc. Any subjects not taught by SBEC certified teachers should be taught at home or at a place of the parents' choosing. While discussions of different perspectives on historical and current events are appropriate for older students in some classes like social studies or the arts because those teachers are trained to conduct them in an educational manner, the opinions of others, to include the teachers, should not be treated as facts and used to make any student feel badly about their own opinions or perspectives.

3) Most of you either know or love a veteran. You know the depths of their devotion to duty and how they will always stand up for what is the right thing, even if to their own detriment. That's one of the things I would bring to this position. My oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and to serve my community did not expire with my enlistment. It will continue at the same level as your trustee.

4) We need a teacher on the school board. Decisions made in the boardroom affect the classrooms, but for decades we haven't had anyone with experience as a public school classroom teacher sitting on that board. It's like having a hospital board of directors with no physicians.

5) We're all neighbors. Let's act accordingly. Don't assume the worst of others just because you don't see things differently. Differences in opinions are usually based on different life experiences, not on evil or stupidity. If we can do that, we can find common sense answers to any issues that pop up.

A few brief points of interest about me to consider:

* Former Tomball ISD student - Tomball Elementary through Tomball HIgh School Class of 1995

* I probably sacked your groceries at Klein's Supermarket!

* U.S. Army veteran, Life member of the VFW

* Former Substitute Teacher - Tomball ISD

* Former Classroom Teacher - Spring ISD

* 2007 Texas History Teacher of the Year - Daughters of the Republic of Texas

* Former Assistant Principal - Tomball ISD

* Professor of Education - Lone Star College System

* Former Officer in Charge of all Professional Military Education - Texas State Guard

* Lead Faculty - Associate of Arts in Teaching - Lone Star College Montgomery

However you decide to vote, thank you for participating in our democracy. It's fragile, and was bought at a high price. Let's do this right.

I'm very grateful to Rep. Swanson for her invitation to testify to the Texas House Defense & Veterans' Affairs Committee in support of Texas House Bill 282. I hope everyone will reach out to their State Representatives and State Senators to encourage them to support the bill.

Congratulations Tina Salem on your election win! It was nice getting to meet you and if you're anything like the band moms that were around when I was in the Tomball Cougar Pride Band, then I'm confident that you'll work tirelessly for the kids.

Thanks to Jim Engelke for keeping it classy. It was good getting to know you and I hope we'll be able to work on something together in the future.

My greatest thanks goes to the 9,591 of my neighbors who trusted me with their vote. Although we didn't come out ahead, your large amount of support shows the leadership in our district what the concerns and priorities of so many of you are, and I believe that's a message they'll hear loud and clear.

I hope you'll trust me with your vote for Position #1! Thanks to so many of my neighbors for all the great conversation...

Early voting starts Monday, and a lot of folks have been asking me about my thoughts on the other races, with some people even saying, "Tell me who to vote for!" A few weeks ago I posted some of my thoughts related to some big endorsements, and after those few weeks, a few more endorsements, and having attended some candidate forums, I have some deeper thoughts to share on top of the previous ones.

Firstly, a lot of people are getting very irrational. People are stealing signs, others are making up stories about candidates that are opposing their friends/family, and the whole thing is getting nonsensical very fast.

The first thing we need to remember is that ALL humans have biases, and most humans have a strong sense of loyalty to tribe. It's not a conservative thing or a liberal thing, it's not a pro-incumbent thing or a pro-challenger thing. Our biases are formed based on our own unique experiences and perspectives, not based on who is good or evil, smart or dumb. It's something we need to consider when hearing other people's opinions and when expressing our own. I wish we could normalize including our own biases in the discussion when we make our points.

So, before I answer "Who should I vote for?," I'll start with openly and honestly discussing my own biases as they apply towards these TISD elections and elections in general...

1) I have previously voted for 6 of the 7 sitting Trustees, this includes all 3 of the incumbents who are running this year.

2) I think it is important to have Trustees with children currently enrolled in the schools.

3) I believe in term limits for all elected offices.

4) I am a professional educator and believe teachers need a strong voice in all levels of government.

5) I am a veteran and think that lessons learned in uniform are forged in fires that are not comparable to other experiences.

6) I have a child enrolled in Tomball ISD.

7) I like people who are nice.

That being said, here are how my own biases are being applied to this specific election:

Position 1: I am a candidate... that's the biggest bias in play when I talk about this race! I spoke at the Tomball Chamber of Commerce forum about how Mrs. Salem and Mr. Engelke are both fantastic people who care deeply about this community and are loved and respected by many because of their selfless work they have done for the good of the town. I also mentioned that if Mrs. Salem was running for city council that you'd see a "Tina Salem for City Council" sign in my yard, and if Mr. Engelke was running for state representative, I would be wearing a "Jim Engelke for State Rep" button on my jacket. But in this specific race for a school board position, my own biases compel me to advocate for putting a teacher on the board since we currently don't have one, and I can't remember the last time we did. I also feel it is important to have parents with kids currently enrolled in the district on the board, and I am the only one in the race for Position #1 that does. Does this mean that once my son graduates from high school that I won't seek reelection? Yes. Feel free to screenshot this and hold me to it! 🙂

Position 2: On a strictly personal level, I like Michael Pratt a lot. We've had a lot of interactions over the years, and they have always been positive. I also feel a sense of loyalty to him because he and I are both veterans. He also has a child still currently enrolled in the district. He checks most of my boxes, and the only reason I have for pause is that one of my overall general beliefs, not just for school board, is in term limits. I don't know Stephanie Lopez very well, but she's always been kind and pleasant when we've met, she's got experience working in public education as a speech language pathologist (SLP), and she makes a fair point about how our Hispanic community is getting bigger, but has no representation on the board. Mrs. Lopez getting endorsed by the GOP also tips the scales, even if in different ways, for most of us. I'm sad to report that Brett Guillory has dropped out of the race. I was happy about his candidacy because I do want to have more teachers on the board, a group that is also underrepresented. The Board makes decisions that impact the classrooms, I feel like at least one teacher should be included in those decisions.

Position 3: Brandon Batchelor checks my box of being a teacher. I don't know him very well, but our mutual colleagues speak well of him. A phrase I heard repeatedly was "The kids loved him." From our handful of meetings, he comes off to me as being very genuine. Jennifer Kratky is the only one in the race with students currently enrolled in the District, which as I've mentioned, is one of the things I have a bias in favor of. She also is the candidate with the GOP endorsement, which tips the scales, probably for all of us one way or the other. I ran against McStravick in 2016, and I recall him personally running a positive campaign even if some of his supporters got a bit overzealous. His cheering section is pretty loud and proud... but as I previously mentioned, I have strong feelings about Trustees having kids in school as well as term limits. Any time I don't support someone after two terms, it's not because I have an issue with them personally, it's just because I feel like it's the best nature of democracy to get new eyes on things every 8 years or so.

Position 4: Every time I've come across Mark Lewandowski, he's had a handshake and kind words to extend to me. I am friends with some of his family members through my time in high school working at Klein's Supermarket and they also are great people. These and other reasons are why he's had my vote more than once in the past. I don't know Billy Moore as well as Mark, but when voting for a Trustee position, I will always factor in who has young kids and how long has the incumbent been in that office.

If your priorities and/or biases line up with mine, then I can tell how how I'm leaning...

Position 1: Ferguson

Position 2: My heart says Pratt, my belief in term limits says Lopez. I'm going to spend a lot of time thinking about this over the weekend. I usually vote on the first day of early voting, but if I don't vote on Monday, this race will be the reason.

Position 3: Kratky first choice, Batchelor second choice

Position 4: Moore

That being said... keep in mind that if some things that are important to me are less important to you, then that could shift who I would suggest would be the the best candidate for you. Additionally, what's more important is that we all need remember that supporting Candidate A doesn't require trashing or trolling Candidate B. When supporting your candidate online or in person, be upfront with the reasons and confess your biases. I think undecided voters will trust that more, and that will be what benefits your desired candidate the most.

Also, if you do come across information online, remember that just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's true. I encourage everyone to communicate with the candidates if you read or hear something troubling about them to be sure you get all sides of the story. I was glad that several folks reached out to me in August to ask about rumors and half-truths they heard about me so that I could put their concerns to rest. I hope everyone will give all the other candidates that same opportunity.

I welcome everyone's comments and look forward to considering other points of view in the responses. I hope they will be civil and also honest with their biases. And I don't mean something transparent like "My bias is I love America and freedom, so I support Candidate A." I mean like, "I went to kindergarten with Candidate B, and I just like the cut of her jib."

God bless all of you.

It has come to my attention that someone has been stealing Tina Salem's campaign signs. This is not only criminal, but wholly un-American. Trying to squash free speech is an assault on all of our Constitutional rights, regardless of which candidate you support.

Additionally, Tina is a fantastic person who cares deeply about this community and someone I have come to personally like since the campaign began, and she doesn't deserve this kind of disrespect.

It has been reported to me that the first one was a large 4x3 sign stolen tonight off of the fence of a private homeowner whose property backs up to TMHS. I'm told the homeowner tried to stop the criminal and they drove off in a gold-colored suburban. Witnesses report that the thief is an older white male, maybe in his 70s, balding, heavy set, about 5’9” and had an older lady in the suburban with him. They say he folded the sign, put it in the back seat and drove off. The second report I got was someone stealing a campaign magnet off her friend's car.

If anyone knows who might have done this, please say something.

If you're the turd that perpetrated this crime and you happen to be reading this, you should know that recently some folks were saying rude and untrue things about Jim Engelke and me online in an attempt to show support for Tina, and she quickly made it clear that she did not condone this behavior and promised to ask them to stop. Thievery and trash talk are not how we are doing things in the race for Position #1. Tina, Jim, and I are like three kids trying out for the same starting position ON THE SAME TEAM. The coaches (voters) will decide who makes the cut based on weighing each of our strengths, and the one who makes it will have the support of the other two moving forward. If you think showing up to the try-outs and talking trash from the stands or stealing the kids' equipment will result in you getting whatever it is that you want, you'll discover that you're sorely mistaken.

Whoever you are, you need to return the stolen property ASAP.
