How are the current facilities in such need of resources? Did the District ignore repairs?

No, in fact, the opposite is true. District maintenance staff continue to do their best to keep the schools safe and in the best shape possible. This includes spending thousands of dollars each year on basic and “Band-Aid” repairs to expensive, outdated systems that no longer function efficiently. However, due to space shortages and the building's effective lifespan, most repairs are no longer enough. The high school and elementary school are not ADA accessible. The district uses every square foot in each of the buildings. Continuing to spend money on repairs and makeshift modifications is not the best use of District dollars. The most cost-efficient, fiscally responsible action is to consider a long-term facility plan that accommodates the district for the next 75 years.

The Essential Plan is the district's strategic solution to keep Aurora's school buildings safe, functional, and equipped for high-quality education.

The plan addresses three primary challenges:

* Elementary Education — a portion of Craddock Elementary is over 100 years old, with 1940s-era classrooms that are undersized for today's early elementary programs.
* Transportation — the current facility can no longer adequately service Aurora's bus fleet and lacks space for equipment like bus lifts.
* Building Preservation — key mechanical and structural systems at Miller, Leighton, Harmon, and Aurora High are nearing the end of their expected lifespans.

A bond issue can only be used for facilities — construction, repairs, safety equipment, buses, and technology. It cannot be used for teacher salaries, classroom supplies, or daily operating costs.

The Essential Plan is Aurora City Schools' proposed facility improvement project, appearing on the November 3, 2026, ballot. Developed over the past two years through community feedback, staff collaboration, and partnership with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission, the plan addresses the district's highest-priority facility needs.

LEIGHTON SCHOOL CLOSED TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2026

Good Evening, Leighton Families.

This is your Superintendent, Dr. Paul Milcetich, with an important message regarding school tomorrow. Due to the failure of the air conditioning system at Leighton Elementary School, Leighton will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, September 2nd. All other Aurora City Schools will remain open on their regular schedules.

Since this afternoon, our district team has worked diligently to secure the necessary parts and complete repairs in an effort to avoid closing school. Unfortunately, compressor issues have prevented us from getting the system fully operational, and the unit will need to be shut down tomorrow to complete the necessary repairs. With the current Heat Advisory and anticipated temperatures, we do not believe we can safely and appropriately operate the building without a functioning cooling system.

We know that closing school creates an inconvenience for our families, and this decision was not made lightly. We also recognize that tomorrow was scheduled to be Picture Day, and we will communicate a new date as soon as it is rescheduled.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as our maintenance team works to get Leighton back up and running as quickly as possible. Thank you for your continued support, and as always, Go Greenmen!

HARMON SCHOOL FALL FUNDRAISER 2026

The Harmon School Fall Fundraiser begins on August 25th and will run through September 8, 2026.
