The Rural Hitch is a rural water‑supply operation that uses engines and hose lays to provide a continuous water supply where hydrants at the scene are not available. In this version, engines deployed 2½‑inch supply lines into a clappered Siamese, which fed a large‑diameter supply line to the attack engine at the fire scene. The supply engines then cycled to a nearby hydrant to refill, returned to the clapper valve, and reconnected their 2½‑inch lines, providing a continuous water supply to the attack engine without interrupting fireground operations.

On Monday, May 1, 2026, we recognized International Firefighters’ Day and honored the men and women who serve our community with courage, skill, and compassion. The City of Aurora proudly issued an official proclamation recognizing our firefighters for their dedication to protecting lives, property, and the wellbeing of our residents and visitors. Fire Department members, along with several Aurora Police Officers, celebrated the occasion by sharing dinner together at the fire station.

Tonight, the Aurora Fire Department conducted hands‑on training with F‑500 Encapsulator Agent, a foam alternative designed for today’s hotter, faster‑burning fires. F‑500 is a multi‑class wetting and encapsulating agent that rapidly cools, encapsulates fuels, and interrupts the fire’s chemical chain reaction, giving us faster knockdown with significantly less water than plain water alone. This product is fluorine‑free and 100% biodegradable, while also reducing smoke and toxic byproducts, which helps protect our firefighters and our community from carcinogenic exposure. F‑500 can be used on Class A materials, flammable liquids, vehicle fires, and even emerging hazards like lithium‑ion batteries, making it a great fit for the wide variety of incidents we respond to in and around Aurora.

Spent Saturday on Table Rock Lake at Campbell Point in Shell K**b attending a Marine Firefighting for Structural Firefighters course hosted on the water with several area fire departments. This training focused on boat fires, operations from the water, and how land‑based fire departments like the Aurora Fire Department integrate with marine units during lake incidents. Excellent class and a great opportunity to sharpen our skills so we’re better prepared to support our regional partners and protect the public both on the shore and on the water.

On Saturday, April 18, members of the Aurora City Fire Department and Aurora Rural Fire Department attended a “Large Machinery Rescue” class in Nixa, Missouri, taught by LETS Training Solutions. This was a very informative, hands-on class focused on victim rescue from large machinery, including augers, forklifts, tractors, and balers. Participants also practiced cutting various types of metal using different saws and rescue tools to safely access and extricate trapped victims.

Last night, Aurora Fire Department personnel conducted hands-on training focused on small tool operations, practicing with the K12 saw, chainsaws, cutting torch, Sawzall, and electric hacksaw on a variety of materials. This type of skills-based training is critical to firefighter readiness and effectiveness on the fireground. Proficiency with cutting tools directly impacts the speed and safety of forcible entry, victim extrication, and ventilation operations — all time-sensitive tasks where hesitation or equipment unfamiliarity can cost lives. Regular hands-on repetition ensures that when these tools are needed in high-stress, low-visibility conditions, our members can operate them confidently, efficiently, and safely.

With everyone out on these nice days doing yard work and burning, please remember the City of Aurora’s Open Burning Regulations. Even though this flyer shows a July 1 start date, that is from an older version—this ordinance is in effect now. Just follow these seven rules and be aware that both the Fire Department and Police Department can cite you for illegal burning if the regulations are not followed. STAY SAFE!
