Tonight, after putting my own children to bed, I sat down to start writing personal messages inside every journal for The Haven.

Not because I expect every person who walks through our doors to write. But because I want them to know that when they’re ready, they already have a place to begin.

Healing doesn’t happen on a schedule. Sometimes it starts with a conversation. Sometimes with silence. Sometimes with a single word written on a page.

Every person who joins us will receive a journal to keep, not as an assignment, but as a reminder that their story matters.

I hope one day someone opens theirs and remembers that before they ever shared their story, they were already seen.

Monday Reminder 🌿

You do not have to have everything figured out this week.

Take the next step.
Drink the coffee.
Send the email.
Ask for help if you need it.
Rest when you can.

Healing, growth, and change rarely happen all at once, they happen one small choice at a time. Be gentle with yourself this week. You’re doing better than you think.

This flyer will soon be showing up throughout our community. 💜

We are incredibly proud to introduce The Haven. A monthly, peer-led support space created for sexual assault survivors and their loved ones seeking connection, understanding, and hope.

Healing can feel isolating, but it doesn’t have to happen alone. Whether you’re ready to share your story or simply sit and listen, you are welcome exactly as you are.

If you see this flyer in your favorite coffee shop, library, business, or community space, know that it was placed there with intention and the hope that it reaches the one person who needs to know they are not alone.

Please consider sharing this post so it can reach someone who may be searching for a safe place to begin.

💜 You belong here.

June is PTSD Awareness Month 💙

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’ve been through, but their behaviors can tell a story. From emotional outbursts to withdrawal or trouble sleeping, the signs of PTSD in children can show up in many different ways.

By learning to recognize these signs, we can respond with patience, understanding, and care—rather than confusion or frustration.

Recognize the signs. Support the healing.

At the Dr. Bill Lewis Center, we’re committed to creating safe, supportive spaces where children can begin to heal and thrive.

I am up late doing things to get around for the next few weeks. The Haven starts on 6/20 and we are discussing our results from the anonymous forum on 6/21. I am so proud of both of these. One will help create a flowing system of support for survivors and the other is bringing in person to support groups to DeKalb County.

Thankful to be doing this work and extremely grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact on others through our journey.

Our founder has officially finished the Office for Victims of Crime’s Victim Assistance Training Online (VAT Online) program. This isn’t the end goal. In fact, it’s the first of many trainings lined up. But this is another tool, another lesson, and another step toward building the kind of organization our community deserves.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support this mission. We are building something meaningful together, and we remain committed to ensuring that survivors and their loved ones feel seen, heard, and supported.
