May has been an eventful month, and at our last City Council meeting on May 18, we recognized the men, women and businesses who each have a part in making our city great.
Powder Springs’ experienced citizens were recognized with a proclamation recognizing May as Older Americans Month. The city’s proclamation highlights this year’s theme of “Champion Your Health” by the Administration for Community Living, which is encouraging individuals to take an active role in managing their own health, making informed decisions that support independence, accessing preventive care and more.
Read by Councilwoman Patricia Wisdom, the proclamation was presented to Vangie Rodenbeck, Special Projects Supervisor for Community Programs & Outreach, who accepted on behalf of the city’s Senior Center.
The May 18th meeting came on the heels of May 15’s National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the previous week’s National Police Week, which pays special recognition to police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. A resolution presented to the Powder Springs Police Department proclaimed “love and gratitude for its police officers” and encouraged all citizens to “join us in honoring and recognizing our police officers who serve daily to keep our community safe.”
The proclamation was read by Councilman Dwayne Green and presented to Lt. Douglas Racine on behalf of the Powder Springs Police Department.
May 17-23, meanwhile, was National Public Works Week. According to the American Public Works Association (APWA), this year's theme is “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” and Monday’s city proclamation for the week encourages citizens to recognize our public works employees “for the substantial contributions in protecting our health, safety, and quality of life.”
Mayor Pro Tem Dwight McMutry read the proclamation and presented it to Dr. Henry Smith, Human Resources Deputy Director, on behalf of the Public Works department.
And a proclamation recognizing Economic Development Week underscored the importance of those professionals who work to connect “residents, business leaders, elected officials, industry executives and educational institutions to advance job creation, community investment, infrastructure improvements and long-term opportunity.”
Councilman Raja Antone read and presented the proclamation to Assistant City Manager Tammi Sadler-Jones on behalf of the Economic Development department.
These proclamations were highlighted in our most recent recap of City Council action. Shortly after each City Council meeting, we post on our website a rundown of the meeting, which we also highlight in our weekly city e-newsletter. Want to read these latest releases?
