And that’s the picture I wanted to close this week with.

Because Black breastfeeding doesn’t have to exist outside of Black culture — it belongs right in the middle of it. At the card table. On hair day. Getting ready for church. Right here on the porch.

This week was never just about breastfeeding. It was about seeing us — our motherhood, our joy, our way of caring for each other. And our babies, nourished by us, woven through all of it.

We all we got.

Black Breastfeeding Week isn’t just about the b**b. 🤱🏾

It’s about a tradition Black mothers have kept long before anybody gave it a name.

We’ve been nourishing since the church pew.

Steadying an ankle to fix a sock before Sunday service. Clipping barrettes tight enough to last through Vacation Bible School. Feeding a baby with one arm while somebody’s toddler falls out laughing on your lap.

The breast is just one more form of what we’ve always done — supply, sustain, show up.

This week, we’re honoring the thread. Not the moment. The legacy.

Cards hittin’ the table.
Somebody talking BIG trash.
Somebody yelling, “AIN’T NO WAY!”
And heaven help the person who reneges. 😭Because in our household, Spades has never been just a card game.

And right in the middle of all that joy… is motherhood. A baby at the breast. A toddler needing Mama for a minute. Because the game doesn’t stop when we become mothers—we just learn how to play our hand with a baby on our hip.

This is Black joy.
This is Black motherhood.
And breastfeeding belongs here too—not tucked away from life, but woven right into the middle of it.

Our babies belong at the table.
Motherhood belongs at the table.
Our joy belongs at the table.
And so do we. 🤎🖤

Mama’s house. Grandma’s. Auntie’s. Somebody fixing a plate, somebody pouring lemonade, somebody laughing too loud — and somebody’s got a baby on her hip, Sunday clothes still on, nursing right there in the middle of it all. Nobody covered up. Nobody left the room. Breastfeeding wasn’t hidden — it was just part of the day.

Somewhere along the way we got told to be quiet about something God designed us to do in the open. We’re done with that.

This is Black motherhood — the kitchen, the aunties, the village, the way we’ve always nourished each other while nourishing our babies. We all we got, and look what we built with it. 🖤

There’s something about hair day that just feels like home. 🤎 Sitting between Mama’s knees, the comb and brush close by, beads clicking at the ends of fresh braids, somebody getting told “hold your head still.” 😂 We know this scene. We’ve lived it. It’s ours.

And right in the middle of it all — a baby at the breast.

Because that’s Black motherhood. We’ve always woven nourishment, beauty, and love into the everyday. Doing hair while feeding babies. Pouring into one little girl while another rests on our chest. None of it separate. All of it culture.

Black breastfeeding isn’t outside of our story — it’s woven into it.

Hair day. Home. Us. 🖤

Babies on hips. Babies in laps. Babies at the breast — while the aunties argued about whose turn it was to draw four.

Because before “mom groups,” there were the girls. And becoming somebody’s mama never meant you stopped being part of the kickback. You just brought the baby with you.

That’s Black motherhood. And it’s why Black breastfeeding has never existed outside of culture — it lives in our kitchens, our friendships, our village.

For Black Breastfeeding Week, we’re going back. Back to the 90s. Back to us. ✊🏾

It’s so easy to think the hospital is neutral territory when you walk in to have your baby. 😅

It’s not. And that’s not shade to providers — it’s just facts about how the system was designed. When your body is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, the last thing you need is someone looking for a problem to solve.

That’s why we’re there. Not to fight — to protect the space your body needs to do its work.
