Organizers from all of the downtown events have been joining forces to ask that the Community Enhancement program funds be increased from 250k to 500k, since the Mayor's current proposed budget only has a 50k increase. This fund is collected as a $.07 per dollar tax on hotel and short-term rental stays in Athens, they do not burden local tax-payers whatsoever.
Allocations from this fund are decided by Athens Mayor and Commission and are supposed to be used specifically for tourism. We are asking our local government for the CEP budget to be enhanced, recommending $500,000 this year - That's only 7% of this year's Hotel/Motel Fund with the other 5.9 MILLION going toward the Classic Center!

We have seen a dramatic decrease in local sponsors due to the state of the economy. With prices increasing every year, many events are wondering how long we'll be able to keep going at this rate. Public input to show how much Athenians love these free, diverse, and family-friendly events is what we need to show the commissioners that this decision would be supported by the community.

Strategic Board Development for Nonprofit Leaders

ACCGov Housing and Community Development Department is pleased to offer a Nonprofit Capacity Building Training session in the month of May! This training is open to staff, board members, or volunteers who work with nonprofit organizations serving Athens-Clarke County residents. Register today!

When: Tuesday, May 12, 8:30 AM - 10:30 AM

Where: 780 Barber Street, Athens, GA 30601 (Snipes Water Resources Center)

Topic: Strategic Board Development for Nonprofit Leaders

A nonprofit’s Board of Directors can be one of its greatest assets—or its greatest risk. A strong, engaged board drives mission impact and sustainability, while even one misaligned member can create disruption and stall progress. This session focuses on how nonprofit leaders can intentionally recruit, prepare, and manage board members to build a high-functioning board that strengthens the organization for the long term.

Learning Objectives:

Design a strategic approach to board recruitment

Identify the skills, perspectives, and community connections needed on your board and implement targeted recruitment practices to fill those gaps.

Establish clear expectations and effective onboarding processes

Develop orientation and training strategies that set board members up for success from day one.

Strengthen board engagement and cohesion

Apply techniques for assimilation, relationship-building, and accountability to foster a productive and mission-aligned board culture.

Address and manage challenging board dynamics

Recognize early signs of disruptive behavior and implement practical strategies to address issues while protecting organizational integrity.

Participants will learn from presenter Sally Kimel-Sheppard of Envision Athens, with opportunities for networking with other nonprofit professionals. HCD staff will also be present to offer follow-up guidance and resources. Onsite parking and light refreshments will be provided.

Please contact Cory Scott, Community Impact Administrator with any questions: [email protected], (706) 613-3155, ext. 8328. More information about HCD and other events can be found on our website, accgov.co
