Kristen Barneich - Arroyo Grande City Council Kristen Barneich
Arroyo Grande City Council Hi there! My public service and activism started in 2000. I was taken aback when my comments were taken seriously.

I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with my first daughter and nervously and passionately spoke at a City Council meeting during Public Comment. I had never been to a meeting and was floored that a citizen could show up , speak their mind, and make a difference in decisions that were being made. From that day forward, I was hooked on becoming vocal about the things that were important in my hometown. In 2

005 I was appointed to the Architectural Review Commission, and then appointed to the Planning Commission from 2007-2013. I have served our wonderful City for the last 6 1/2 years on the City Council. As a 39 year resident, I am passionate about Arroyo Grande's residents and business owners. I have a strong record of public engagement and welcome input from constituents. I'm a big believer in collaboration to get the job done, and I know my dedicated and experienced leadership will be paramount in helping navigate post Covid-19 times. EXPERIENCE & COMMUNITY SERVICE

The City Council proclaimed June 2024 to be “Pride Month” at the May 28, 2024 Meeting.

Our nation was founded on the principle of equal rights for all people, but the fulfillment of this promise has been long in coming for many Americans. Some of the most inspiring moments in our history have arisen from the various civil rights movements that have brought one group after another from the margins to the mainstream of American society.

In the movement toward equal rights for le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) people, a historic turning point occurred on June 28, 1969, in New York City, with the onset of the Stonewall Riots. During these riots, LGBTQ+ citizens rose up and fought against the discriminatory criminal laws that have since been declared unconstitutional.

LGBTQ+ pride celebrations have taken place around the country every June to commemorate the beginning of the Stonewall Riots and June is celebrated as LGBTQ+ Pride Month nationwide.

The City of Arroyo Grande has a diverse LGBTQ+ community that includes people of all ethnicities, religions, and professions, and recognition from one’s government is crucial for feeling safe and seen in one’s community.

The City of Arroyo Grande believes everyone should be able to live without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence, and hatred-based on race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Recognizing and celebrating Pride Month influences awareness and provides opportunities to engage in dialogue to strengthen alliances, build acceptance, and advance equal rights for all.

Please join me in welcoming Mr. Matt Downing as our new City Manager starting on January 8th. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Matt for over a decade when I served on the Planning Commission, and then the City Council. He knows our town, our needs and our people. His work ethic, professionalism and integrity is top notch and I’m thrilled to work with him once again!

Wishing Chief Lieberman well in his retirement!

Press Release from the Five Cities Fire Authority:
Fire Chief Steve Lieberman has announced his retirement. Lieberman will leave the agency in December 2023, and a recruitment process to fill the Fire Chief position will begin shortly.

Chief Lieberman shared, “I began my community involvement as a member of the Grover City Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1990’s. My wife and I have raised our family in the Five Cities area, and that sense of being a local resident has driven me to do what I believe to have been best for our communities in terms of fire and emergency response. I believe it is time for the next Fire Chief to bring strong operational experience, a willingness to engage in our communities, and to do what is needed to further the evolution of the Five Cities Fire Authority."

Public statement from 4403 regarding recent council meetings held in and :

The Five Cities Firefighters are thankful to the communities of Arroyo Grande and Grover Beach for going forward with the Analysis of Fire Services done by Baker Tilly. While the presentation given to the Councils this week was not the complete report, we were excited to see some of the preliminary findings address the need for more staffing and ongoing investment from the communities to keep our residents and employees safe. The Five Cities Firefighters look forward to working alongside City Staff, Elected Officials and the public in coming up with a fire service plan, together. It is a great opportunity to set up a positive and safe future for our residents and personnel alike.
