T.E.C.H.E. Project

T.E.C.H.E. Project The Teche Ecology, Culture & History Education Project is passionate about making Bayou Teche a healthier waterway through action and education. Landry Parish.

The Teche Ecology, Culture and History Education Project started in 2009 in St. Our organization is made up of individuals passionate about making Bayou Teche a healthier waterway for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating, tubing and even swimming! Along with aesthetics and recreation, we advocate for improved water quality in the Bayou Teche watershed and Teche-Vermilion basin through the reductio

n of non-point source pollution. Bayou Teche is on the federal list of impaired waterways because the water quality is so poor it can not support fish and wildlife propagation. By reducing pollution, mainly sewage and run-off, we can help restore habitat. We are are working to make Bayou Teche whole again through action and education about the ecology, culture and history. What started with a small group of people in Arnaudville as an effort to pull debris from the bayou has become a movement championed by communities and volunteers. Private donations helped purchase a motor for our barge, the St. Michael. Volunteer crews led by Dane Thibodeaux andBlake Couvillion work with the public and St. Landry and St. Martin Parish sheriffs offices to pull refrigerators, hot water heaters and other items littering the bayou and the banks. We plan to hold public cleanups regularly and encourage volunteers with motorboats, kayaks and canoes to join us. TECHE Project has relationships with the Tour Du Teche, the Kiwanis Club of Breaux Bridge, Pack and Paddle, Bayou Teche Experience, Bayou Teche Brewery, Bayou Vermilion District, Arnaudville Area and Breaux Bridge Chambers of Commerce, St. Martin Parish governments and sheriffs as well as many of the towns and cities along Bayou Teche. We welcome new programing related to the ecology, culture or history of Bayou Teche. Drop us an email if you are interested in learning how you can create and direct a program about Bayou Teche. The Teche is one of the most historically and culturally significant bayous in Acadiana and we are working to ensure it is protected and celebrated for generations to come.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our beloved volunteers, Joey Abshire, who died last Friday at his fishing camp in Pointe-aux-Chenes. Joey lived on Bayou Teche in Ruth and was an active member with The TECHE Project in so many ways. He was a long-time wood duck box participant and served as our Community Ambassador for Parks. He was also the donut guy at Shake Your Trail Feather, gladly bringing treats to our hard-working volunteers. But what we will remember most about Joey is his welcoming presence as our bartender at the banquet and Twilight events. We will greatly miss his smiling face. Here’s to hoping Joey is catching speckled trout in heaven.

We love some smack-talking canoe racing!

🛶💨 Lion Morgan and Whitney have officially started talking smack before the canoe races even begin. 😂

They say everybody better move out the way because all they’re gonna see is smoke coming off that canoe when they fly past everybody to the finish line. 🌊🏁

Confidence level: 1000.
Paddling skills: TBD. 👀🤣

Go Reed! You’re doing great things on the bayou!

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony for St. Martin Parish’s first kayak kiosk, I spoke with Reed Rudasill about Wanderlust Rentals, a business bringing a big-city bike-share concept to Southern Louisiana waterways.

Thanks to everyone who came out for our Spring Bayou Cleanup on Saturday! We had 22 people in all, 6 paddle boats and 4 motor boats. A great crew and great weather! We can add another half ton to our trash total, including 2 freezers, a boat hull, large rug and, of course, the usual styrofoam, plastic bottles and miscellaneous bags of stinky stuff. Special thanks goes to Teche-Vermilion Fresh Water District, Louisiana Bayou Society and the Town of Leonville for their support!

Learn more about the Louisiana Bayou Society and the great work they do cleaning up our waterways!

The story of St. Martin Parish is inseparable from the story of the water that flows through it. Life here has always moved along water, carrying culture, commerce, cuisine and language with it. Seen from above, the network of waterways running through the parish resembles a giant living organism.
