Delighted to share my experience celebrating Autism Acceptance Day this morning! It was an honor to be among fearless advocates committed to change and acceptance for people with autism. Before advocates took on a busy day of meetings with legislators, I had the privilege of providing remarks and bringing greetings from Governor Moore, who issued a proclamation recognizing April 2, 2024 as Autism Acceptance Day.

Through partnerships with advocates, organizations, and individuals with autism, the State is taking bold action on behalf of the community. The Department of Disabilities is crafting a strategic plan, with the help of the Statewide Coordinator for Autism Strategy and the Advisory Stakeholder Group on Autism-Related Needs, to create a more accepting, inclusive, and connected Maryland for people with autism.

Let's continue working together to promote acceptance and inclusion!

Representation matters. Experience matters.

Victoria Rodríguez-Roldan brings both to the position of State Coordinator for Autism Strategy.

“One of my guiding stars in a way … [is] ensuring that the policies that we make with regards to autism, with regards to disability in general, don’t just access the privileged few that have the resources to fight for those resources and rights,” Rodríguez-Roldán said, “but instead also reach all those with disabilities [that] are less popular or more marginalized, all those who live at the intersections of disability and being a person of color or being LGBTQ or being in rural areas and so on.”

Victoria Rodríguez-Roldán, an autistic and trans Latina woman, is leading the state’s crafting and implementation of a plan to address the needs of autistic people.

Ensuring MD has a strong State Disabilities Plan means ensuring we hear all of MD!

Just wrapped up 4-days of tours and listening sessions in Western, MD with our new State Autism Coordinator, Victoria Rodriguez-Roldan.

Thank you to all that joined us and highlighted the needs of our most rural areas in the state.

Just wrapped up Day 1 of the National Governors Association Disability Inclusive Workforce Summit!

The overarching massage today:

1) People with disabilities have important and needed skills to offer employers.

2) Creating an inclusive workforce is as much about being socially responsible as it is about being economically responsible.
