πŸŒ±πŸ… Things are growing fast in our greenhouse operations!

From thriving tomatoes and cucumbers to healthy eggplant, bok choy, and lettuce, this year's crops at Point Mackenzie Correctional Farm are off to a strong start. Thousands of vegetable starter plants are being carefully nurtured every day before making their way to the fields, where they'll continue growing to support food production efforts across the Department.

Beyond the harvest, these operations provide valuable hands-on agricultural experience and meaningful work opportunities for inmate workers, helping build skills while contributing to a successful growing season.

Here's to healthy plants, hard work, and another productive year ahead! πŸŒΏπŸšœβ˜€οΈ

πŸš‘πŸ©Ί Training never stops at the Alaska Department of Corrections

Because our nursing staff routinely encounter complex medical situations, ongoing emergency response training remains a top priority. Recently, DOC Nursing sent 12 nurses, to Emergency Response Instructor Training, where they became certified instructors in critical emergency medical response skills. These nurses are now qualified to teach staff across all Alaska DOC facilities in airway management, spinal immobilization, and bleeding control.

While we hope these skills are never needed, ensuring our staff are highly trained first responders for medical emergencies can improve outcomes and save lives. The ability to provide this specialized emergency medical training in house is an invaluable resource for both DOC and the patients in our care.

As the year progresses, these instructors will be bringing training opportunities to facilities across the state, helping strengthen emergency preparedness and enhance patient care throughout Alaska's correctional system.

πŸ‘ Congratulations to our nursing team for their commitment to professional growth, preparedness, and excellence in care.

🌎🧹 Making a difference, one bag of trash at a time! πŸ’ͺ♻️

Recently, a dedicated crew of minimum custody inmates and staff from Anvil Mountain Correctional Center spent time cleaning up around the Nome community, including local softball fields, the Icy View area, the AC store, and the surrounding tundra. Their hard work resulted in an impressive 1,550 pounds of trash being removed from the community! πŸ™Œ

One of the most memorable finds? An abandoned homemade trailer missing a wheel that had to be dug out from the bottom of a ditch! 🚜😲

The crew also focused on cleaning around Nome's Monofill, helping remove debris that often gets carried by the wind across the tundra. 🌬️🌿

This effort is just the beginning. Community cleanup projects will continue throughout the summer as we work together to help keep Nome clean and beautiful. β˜€οΈπŸ”οΈ

Thank you to everyone involved for their hard work and commitment to making a positive impact in our community! πŸ‘πŸ’™

🌱🚜 Spring prep is in full swing at the Farm!

Over the past several weeks, Point Mackenzie Correctional Farm staff and hardworking inmate crews have been busy getting the fields ready for a successful growing season. Through soil testing and the application of key soil amendments, they're helping improve soil health, balance nutrients, and create the best possible conditions for healthy crops to thrive. 🌾πŸ₯”πŸ₯•

These efforts are an important part of producing strong harvests while maintaining the long-term health of the Farm's fields. And that's just part of the work happening across the property, with additional improvements taking place in hay fields, garden areas, and lawns as well.

Here's to healthy soil, growing crops, and another productive season ahead! 🌞🌱

πŸ”¨πŸ’Ό Preparing for success starts before the release date.

On April 29, Goose Creek Correctional Center, in coordination with DOC's Reentry section and the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, hosted a Job/Resource Fair bringing together 27 representatives from 16 organizations, including Home Depot, Cornerstone General Contractors, Partners for Progress, and NineStar.

These job fairs are an incredibly valuable tool for connecting releasing inmates with employers, training opportunities, and community resources that can help them build a successful future.

🀝 Events like this give participants a chance to learn about today’s job market, ask questions directly to employers, and discover resources available to help them get plugged in and moving forward.

A big thank you to all the organizations that took part in supporting second chances and stronger communities across Alaska. πŸ‘

This Memorial Day, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We also recognize the dedicated professionals working in corrections who continue serving their communities every day, including holidays, weekends, and nights. Corrections is a 24/7/365 mission built on sacrifice, commitment, and service to others.

Today, we pause to remember those we have lost and thank those who continue to stand the watch. β€οΈπŸ€πŸ’™

Across Alaska, Department of Corrections staff gathered in Fairbanks, Juneau, and Anchorage to take part in National Police Memorial ceremonies honoring the lives and sacrifices of fallen law enforcement officers. πŸ’™πŸ–€

DOC representatives from institutions, pretrial and probation offices, and divisions across the state stood together in solidarity to pay tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to their communities and fellow Alaskans.

The ceremonies served as a solemn reminder of the courage, dedication, and commitment carried by law enforcement professionals every day. As names were remembered and honors rendered, staff reflected on the lasting impact these officers made through their service and sacrifice.

We honor their memory, stand beside their families and colleagues, and remain committed to never forgetting those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

🌱🌻 Get ready for something special at this year’s Annual Plant Sale! 🌻🌱

Happening Tuesday through Friday, May 19–22 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center.

One of the highlights this year is handcrafted windmill planters, built by our maintenance team and inmate workers from Point Mackenzie Correctional Farm. These unique pieces will be available at the sale and make a great addition to any yard or garden.

Along with the planters, you’ll find a wide variety of beautiful flowers and vegetable starts, all grown with care. It’s a great way to support a meaningful program while getting your garden season underway. 🌸πŸ₯•πŸŒž

⚠️ Heads up: we may close early if everything sells out, and it usually goes fast.
Please remember we accept cash and check only. πŸ’΅

Bring a friend and come see what’s been growing. 🌷🌱
