Three outgoing APS Board of Education members shared poignant reflections on what it’s been like to help lead the state’s largest school district for the last four years as they bid farewell. 💙

Wednesday night’s board meeting was the final one for Board President Danielle Gonzales and board members Crystal Tapia-Romero and Josefina Dominguez, whose terms expire on Dec. 31. Their successors, Rebecca Betzen, Joshua Martinez and Margaret “Warigia” Bowman, respectively, begin their terms on Jan. 1.

At the end of the Wednesday meeting, outgoing board members took a few minutes to reflect on their journeys and on the progress the district has made in the last four years.

In 2022, the APS Board of Education went to the Albuquerque community and asked what community wants from the school system. One of the answers was that we want our students to be ready for life success after high school. This was actualized with a goal around increasing access to, and completion, of "career-connected learning courses." And the good news is, PROGRESS IS POSSIBLE! Learn more here:

This morning Valley High School - Albuquerque, NM honored Dr. Nasario Garcia and the class of 1955! Dr. Garcia is a member of the very first graduating class of VHS and shared how his classmates selected the school's mascot, colors and more. Dr. Garcia is an author of multiple books, 35 of which he donated to VHS today. Today's event was another example of the sense of comunidad, familia y tradicion of VHS and the historic North Valley. What an honor to be present! 💛

Although the results from election day were not what we were hoping for, we have done something remarkable.

I want to thank everyone who knocked on doors, made phone calls, talked to their neighbors, donated to my campaign, and, most importantly, voted. I also want to thank my opponent, Rebecca Beltzen, who ran a strong campaign.

I have dedicated my life to improving education. And I’m not stopping now. I look forward to continuing to fight for our community and our schools in other ways.
