Camping season is here! The Linn County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind you that a quick way to ruin a great trip, is by having something taken from your campsite, be it by a 2 or 4-legged creature.

Here are a few simple steps to keep your stuff from becoming forest Facebook Marketplace sales:

• Lock your vehicle – Valuables out of sight or take them with you. Leaving anything in plain view is basically putting out a “please take me, the door is open sign!”
• Ask for help – Heading out for the day? Nicely ask your camping neighbor (if they look trustworthy) to keep an eye on things while you are gone. Just know they’ll probably do it… while quietly judging your tent setup.
• Secure big items – Cable-lock your grill, bike, or kayak to a tree. Nothing ruins a camping trip faster than watching a determined tweaker (human or bear) try to drag your cooler into the woods.
• Store food properly –Your food needs to be protected from any wild animal that may think it’s buffet time at the Golden Corral.
• Dry gear during the day – Never leave expensive sleeping bags, jackets, or boots out overnight. Not only will an animal see that nice pair of sweatpants as a cozy cushion for its home, other campers may see it as an opportunity to sneak away with some of your favorite (or not so favorite) camping items.
• Leave valuables at home – Seriously, the only thing streaming in the woods should be the river. Leave the unnecessary electronics at home!

Enjoy Linn County’s beautiful camping spots!

As Foster fills, Green Peter drops a few feet. Unfortunately this means that the Whitcomb Creek boat ramp will not be launchable starting Friday. Thistle Creek boat ramp is only a couple of miles away though and will be launchable for a while yet.
