What happened during arrest at Firestone High School?
On Wednesday, a 16-year-old student was arrested at Firestone High School after allegedly evading metal detectors. Video evidence reveals a school resource officer striking the student multiple times during the arrest, raising significant concerns about appropriate use of force in our schools.
While another officer present did not physically engage, their involvement during this troubling incident cannot be overlooked. The student, found with a cell phone (not a weapon), was initially charged with misdemeanors, but those charges have been dropped pending a thorough investigation.
This incident underscores the critical need for transparency and accountability in our police practices, especially within our educational institutions. We stand committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students. Together, we must advocate for a policing approach that emphasizes de-escalation and respect, ensuring that our schools remain places of safety and learning.
The Akron community deserves a system where every student is treated with dignity and respect. Let’s unite to demand change and accountability in our schools.
