As part of our newly launched Youth Climate Action Fund, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies, we’re asking Akron youth ages 15-24 to design and implement projects based on one of four key climate action focus areas. Today, we’ll explain focus area #4 – Climate Resilient Communities!

Climate resilience is about helping communities prepare in all kinds of ways for climate change impacts like extreme heat, heavy rainfall, or bad storms.

We invite youth and their sponsors to approach the topic creatively. Maybe you’ve noticed that your church’s green space floods frequently and could use a rain garden that would soak up more of that stormwater and support local habitat for pollinators. Maybe you live in a neighborhood with urban heat island impacts and want to use trees to create a shady gathering space at a local community organization. Maybe you’re more passionate about video games and want to prototype a game where users have to make climate-smart choices to win.

If this topic area sounds interesting, consider applying for the YCAF microgrant to get funding to tackle your unique project. The program will award microgrants ranging from $1k-$5k to teams of Akron youth and their local fiscal sponsor. Learn more at akronohio.gov/YCAF.

Special thanks to United Cities and Local Governments, Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation at Johns Hopkins University, & C40 Cities!
