5:10pm Update - Late this afternoon, we were notified by representatives of Highland Tavern that they plan to be closed completely today and tomorrow. We appreciate the willingness of all bars in Highland Square to participate in the solidarity early closing this weekend, and we hope to work with all willing establishments to confront the public safety challenges we have seen in this nightlife district.

REMINDER - The following list of steps will be effective today and tomorrow in Highland Square in collaboration with the bars and businesses to help decrease the violence in that area. These steps will only be in place for this weekend. The City will continue to evaluate with businesses, residents, and patrons on an ongoing basis about future weekends. We held a press conference yesterday discussing in more detail the issues happening in Highland Square, the role we're taking to help mitigate the problem, and the role the rest of the community can take. At a press conference today, Mayor Malik and community partners announced the launch of PIVOT, (Partnership for Intervention, Violence Outreach, and Transformation), a new city–funded Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Program.

Through the PIVOT program, when someone is a victim of gun violence and is rushed to the emergency room for care, a trained clinical therapist will be by their side to connect them with immediate support, trauma-informed care, and long-term community resources. This support will also be extended to their loved ones.

We know that victims of violence are more likely to become further victimized in future incidents or become perpetrators of violence due to retaliation. This initiative aims to intervene in victims' lives and put them on a better path for their future. This is a partnership between the City of Akron, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, Summa Health, and Minority Behavioral Health Group (MBHG). To learn more read here: https://bit.ly/4fIkv1H

Last weekend, three innocent people were shot in Highland Square. Since then, four other individuals have been shot in other parts of our city. Before anything else, let's be clear about something: This violence is unacceptable.

Not because of where it happens. Or who it happens to you. Or who perpetuated the violence. Not because it made headlines or didn’t.
It's unacceptable because human life matters.

The City of Akron will do its part. We will continue to invest resources, enforce the law, partner with our businesses and residents, and pursue every legal option available.

But the message we want people to hear clearly is this:

Government cannot replace the role of a parent.
Government cannot make someone value human life.
Government cannot make someone put down a gun and walk away from an argument.

Those are individual choices that each and every person must make for themselves. But every single one of us has a role to play in influencing those choices for our loved ones and for our community.

Today - we announced additional steps we are taking in coordination with Highland Square bars this weekend to put a stop to this violence. See the graphic below for more.

Yesterday, the Ohio General Assembly finalized and approved Senate Bill 450, which appropriates $3.7 billion in capital funding throughout the state for the next fiscal year. This year’s capital budget bill provides nearly $7.8 million for Summit County projects, including $400,000 for the City of Akron’s Dan Street Public Safety Training Facility. The funding will allow for improvements to this facility which houses the Akron Police Department’s training bureau and other state and federal agencies. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4xl8Qw2
