Congrats Captain Owens! You make us proud!!!
Captain Stacey Owens has been elected to the Board of Directors for the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) at the organization’s annual convention. His selection solidifies the GPD as a national leader in law enforcement professionalism.
“I congratulate Captain Owens on his selection to serve on the NAMI Board. It is a prestigious honor and recognition both for him and our Department for the significant work we have done to prepare our officers to deal with those suffering from mental illness,” Chief Ken Miller said.
Currently, there are 154 GPD officers who have completed the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training program, which is the most trained in South Carolina. Owens is an active board member of NAMI Greenville and has served as vice president since 2017.
Owens’ selection brings with it nearly 25 years of law enforcement experience in South Carolina as well as a master’s degree in criminal justice. In coordination with NAMI, he successfully managed the launch and implementation of a CIT program within the GPD in 2010.
Owens still serves as the Department’s program coordinator and frequently presents at the national CIT conference and NAMI state conference.
He has testified to the South Carolina House and Senate Judiciary Committee on CIT training, which in part prompted the Palmetto State to pass legislation mandating every officer receive mental health training.
