*Aqua World Trek – Founder’s Story & Vision*
_By Muganyi Silman Kasozi_
The swimming landscape in Uganda has evolved significantly. What was once informal has become more structured, with official requirements, certifications, and standards now essential for establishing a recognized swim club or company.
My personal journey in swimming began with a deep passion for the water. I’ve been fortunate to learn from incredible communities like the Outdoor Swimming Society and other swim groups who have served as my mentors. Their shared knowledge shaped my technique and philosophy in the water.
The idea for Aqua World Trek was inspired by SwimTrek, a company I’ve followed and learned from extensively. Their model showed me how professionalism, safety, and adventure can coexist in open water swimming.
As a swimmer, I am proficient in all four strokes, with a particular strength in backstroke and butterfly. These strokes taught me efficiency: how to conserve energy while covering long distances. Backstroke, especially, feels effortless and has become a personal favorite.
The swimmers I’ve met along the way have been generous with their knowledge, and I’m grateful for every lesson. Now, I believe it’s time to take the next step: to gain formal recognition through accredited training, certifications, and interviews. My long-term goal is to become a certified coach and mentor the next generation of swimmers.
For Aqua World Trek to be officially recognized, we must meet several requirements: obtain certifications from relevant governing bodies, recruit and train students, and participate in official galas and competitions. One challenge we face is parental concern regarding open water swimming due to the risk of bilharzia. To address this, we are pursuing swimming pool memberships to provide a safe, controlled training environment for children while we build trust in open water programs.
At heart, I am a wild swimmer. I love open water and believe in its power to build resilience, confidence, and connection to nature.
