🌍 Happy African Union Day!

Today, 9 September, we commemorate the historic 1999 Sirte Declaration, which paved the way for the establishment of the African Union.

In his message marking the day, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called for renewed commitment to Pan-Africanism, unity and solidarity and for an Africa that is increasingly integrated, peaceful, prosperous and confident in shaping its own future.

“Africa is not seeking a larger place in the world; Africa is reclaiming its rightful place in the world.”

African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights joins the continent in marking this day and reaffirms its commitment to advancing the protection of human and peoples’ rights as part of our shared vision for The Africa We Want.

The African Court's 82nd Ordinary Session was underway!

Four weeks of judicial work have begun in Arusha, Tanzania, as the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights opened its 82nd Ordinary Session.

From 31 August to 25 September 2026, the Judges will take on a busy programme that includes:

9 cases at different stages of consideration

6 decisions to be delivered

14 compliance reviews in cases involving Tanzania as the Respondent State.

In the opening the Session, the President of the Court Honourable Justice Blaise Tchikaya underscored the importance of Judges and the Registry working together to deliver the programme within the four weeks.

The Session also comes at an important moment for the Court as it marks 20 years of advancing human and people's rights in Africa. Preparations will continue for the 20th Anniversary Colloquium, alongside the 3rd Tripartite Judicial Dialogue, 7th African Union Judicial Dialogue and other key upcoming engagements.

A full four weeks ahead for the Court.

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights will hold its 82nd Ordinary Session from 31 August to 25 September 2026 in Arusha, Tanzania.

During the Session, the court will consider pending applications and deliberations on other judicial matters.

On Thursday, 24 September 2026, the Court will deliver six (6) decisions in cases concerning Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger and Malawi.

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, in collaboration with Central University in Accra, Ghana, held a public lecture to mark the court's 20 years of promoting and protecting human and people's rights across Africa.

During the lecture, Hon. Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei, Judge of the African Court, called on African leaders to give the court the support it needs to carry out its work effectively. He also highlighted the importance of supporting the court's legal aid fund and emphasized the court's role in protecting human rights, especially in cases of violence against women and children.

The lecture looked back at the court's achievements over the past 20 years and focused on its continued role in promoting justice, protecting human rights and strengthening the rule of law across the continent.

The Kilimanjaro Academy on African Union Law and the Public Law of Africa officially opened today at the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights in Arusha, Tanzania.

The two-week programme (03 - 14 August 2026) brings together judges, academicians and legal practitioners for lectures, interactive discussions, networking opportunities and institutional learning visits.

Participants will discuss key areas, including Pan-Africanism, African Union law and institutions, peace and security, the AfCFTA, human rights, environmental protection and climate action.

Justice must be within the reach of every African.

That was the key message from the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights at the 2026 African Union ECOSOCC Citizens' Forum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Registrar of the Court Dr. Robert Eno called on African Union African Union to ratify the Protocol establishing the Court, deposit or re-deposit the declaration under Article 34(6) to expand direct access to the Court, and fully implement the Court's judgments.

He also highlighted the vital role of civil society in helping citizens understand and access the African human rights system.

As the Court marks 20 years of operation, Dr. Eno reflected and shared progress on two decades of advancing justice, strengthening the rule of law and protecting human rights across Africa.

"Civil society must reimagine an African Court, not as a court of last resort for States, but as a first refuge for citizens; as a court for the people and not just about the people."
