🎓美國人在台灣：我們的故事——那原道博士（Randall Nadeau）
我和台灣的連結始於四十多年前。從那時候開始，台灣就在我的學術與職業生涯中扮演至關重要的角色。如今，身為台灣傅爾布萊特的執行長，我很榮幸能在這個崗位上促進美國與台灣之間的教育交流，並致力深化美台人民之間的情誼。這些年來，我親眼見證了台灣教育體系的改變與進步，包括教育部對英語教育的大力支持。支持英語教育是為了達成兩項重要目標：培養台灣學生在全球舞台上的能力、信心與競爭力；同時吸引更多國際學生來台攻讀大學學位，進而幫助台灣未來的勞動力變得更多元也更有實力。
傅爾布萊特計畫有助於達成這兩項目標，並且扮演重要角色。我們創造許多機會，讓美國人與台灣人互相學習、彼此合作，一同建立長久的情誼。大家對這類交流機會的需求很大——今年我們的各項計畫一共收到超過1,300份申請，創下歷史新高。我非常希望傅爾布萊特能持續成長，讓我們為更多學生與學者提供交流機會。雖然我們的預算已有所增加，但增幅仍趕不上需求，因此，擴大合作規模、找到更多產業界的夥伴，將為我們提供絕佳機會，有助於我們接觸更多人、發揮更大的影響力。
對我而言，「人」始終是傅爾布萊特計畫的根本。我們致力將美國人與台灣人連在一起，讓他們在教室、大學、社區及職場互動交流，以促進理解、創造合作機會，藉此帶來長遠的影響。我很自豪能成為傅爾布萊特的一分子，協助深化這些連結，致力促進美台之間歷久彌新的情誼。
💡關於那原道博士（Randall Nadeau）：
那原道博士自2019年起擔任學術交流基金會（台灣傅爾布萊特）執行長，此前曾任德州三一大學宗教學特聘教授，投身學術工作長達25年。那原道博士擁有英屬哥倫比亞大學亞洲研究博士學位，長期研究亞洲宗教、台灣及文化認同等議題。他於1983年首次來台學習語言並進行博士論文田野調查，並於2014年以傅爾布萊特資深學者身分重返台灣，延續與台灣的深厚連結。那原道博士長期倡導國際教育與跨文化交流，致力促進台灣與美國之間的教育交流並深化兩地人民之間的情誼。
🎓 Americans in Taiwan: Our Stories — Dr. Randall Nadeau
My connection to Taiwan began more than four decades ago. Since then, Taiwan has become an important part of my academic and professional life. Today, as Executive Director of Fulbright Taiwan, I have the privilege of helping strengthen the educational and people-to-people ties between the United States and Taiwan. I’ve seen firsthand how Taiwan’s education system has evolved, including the Ministry of Education’s strong support for English-language education. There are two important goals behind this effort: to help Taiwanese students become globally competent, confident, and competitive, and to attract more international students to pursue university degrees in Taiwan, helping strengthen and diversify Taiwan’s future workforce.
Fulbright plays an important role in supporting these goals by creating opportunities for Americans and Taiwanese to learn from one another, collaborate, and build lasting relationships. The demand for these opportunities is strong—we received more than 1,300 applications for our programs this year, the largest applicant pool in our history. I would love to see Fulbright grow so that we can provide opportunities to even more students and scholars. Our budget has grown, but not at the pace of demand, which is why expanding partnerships, including with industry, presents an exciting opportunity to help us reach more people and deepen our impact.
For me, Fulbright is ultimately about people. By bringing Americans and Taiwanese together—in classrooms, universities, communities, and workplaces—we build greater understanding and create opportunities for collaboration that can have a lasting impact. I’m proud to be part of an organization that helps strengthen these connections and contributes to the enduring relationship between our two societies.
💡About Dr. Randall Nadeau: Dr. Randall Nadeau has served as Executive Director of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan) since 2019, following a 25-year academic career as a Distinguished Professor of Religion at Trinity University in Texas. He holds a Ph.D. in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia and has conducted extensive research on Asian religions, Taiwan, and cultural identity. He first came to Taiwan in 1983 for language study and dissertation fieldwork; his connection to Taiwan continued in 2014 when he returned as a Fulbright Senior Scholar. A longtime advocate for international education and intercultural exchange, Dr. Nadeau is dedicated to strengthening educational and people-to-people ties between Taiwan and the United States.
