The Australian Consulate in Chiang Mai is operated by an Honorary Consul. The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade appointed Ronald (Ron) Elliott as the Honorary Consul for Australia in Chiang Mai with consular jurisdiction throughout 10 Northern Thailand provinces. These include Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Mae Hong Son, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Sukhothai and Tak. The Royal Thai Government endorsed this appointment with effect from 30 December 2016.
Under the guidance of the Australian Embassy Bangkok the Consulate in Chiang Mai seeks to provide consular assistance to Australians, promote and strengthen the Australian-Thailand bilateral relationships and to support the Australian Embassy in the consular district. The services and Honorary Consul’s functions involve:
Providing consular assistance in a sensitive manner to Australians in relation to their welfare, arrest, whereabouts, death, imprisonment, repatriation, hospitalization, or evacuation.
Accepting new and renewal Passport Applications, on certain days. Providing new passport application forms. Passport information is available at www.passports.gov.au
Maintaining good relations with the Thai government and local authorities relevant to Australia’s consular and other interests.
Assisting the Embassy in relation to Australian commercial, cultural, educational, scientific and technological interests in the consular district as required.
Building general public awareness of Australia through dissemination of information.
Engaging in ceremonial and public affairs activities as a representative of Australia.
Acting as a communication channel between the Australian Embassy, Bangkok and the Thai government in the consular district, when requested, and
Supporting visiting Australian officials and performing other duties as requested by the Australian Embassy, Bangkok.
Service Limitations - There are some limitations to the Australian Honorary Consul role and these services CAN NOT be performed by the Honorary Consul:
• Notarial services such as witnessing or certifying documents, issuing statutory declarations for visa extension, income verification, residence certificates etc.
These services are provided by the Australian Embassy in Bangkok. The Embassy conducts Consular Outreach Programs to Chiang Mai a number of times during the year and can provide notarial services/accepting of passport applications. • เผยแพร่ข้อมูลทั่วไปของออสเตรเลียให้แก่มวลชน
• เข้าร่วมในกิจกรรมพระราชพิธีและกิจกรรมต่างๆในฐานะตัวแทนของประเทศออสเตรเลีย
• ทำหน้าที่เป็นช่องทางการสื่อสารระหว่างสถานทูตออสเตรเลียกรุงเทพฯและรัฐบาลไทยในเขตกงสุล
• ให้การรองรับเจ้าหน้าที่ของออสเตรเลียและปฏิบัติหน้าที่อื่นตามที่สถานทูตออสเตรเลียต้องการ
ข้อจำกัด การให้บริการ – มีข้อจำกัดบางอย่างที่กงสุลออสเตรเลียไม่สามารถดำเนินการได้โดยกงสุลกิตติมศักดิ์:
• บริการการรับรองเอกสารซึ่งได้แก่ การเป็นพยาน, การรับรองเอกสาร, การรับรองสถานะเพื่อใช้สำหรับการขยายวีซ่า, การตรวจสอบรายได้ และใบรับรองที่อยู่อาศัย ฯลฯ
• การรับหรือการดำเนินการหนังสือเดินทางเพื่อวีซ่าหรือการขอสัญชาติออสเตรเลีย;
