Prof. Dr. Bhanubhatra Jittiang, Representative of Thailand to AICHR, will join Commissioner Sayamol Kaiyoorawong, National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, to discuss the implementation of the ASEAN agenda on the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

The discussion will explore how regional commitments can be translated into concrete policies, institutional cooperation, and action at the national level, helping ensure that ASEAN human rights standards deliver tangible benefits for people and communities.

📢 AICHR Thailand Internship Programme – Applications Now Open!

The Office of Thailand’s Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR Thailand) is now accepting applications for one six-month internship position based in Bangkok.

This internship offers an opportunity to gain practical experience in supporting the work of AICHR Thailand while developing a deeper understanding of human rights issues, ASEAN regional cooperation, policy dialogue, public communication, and stakeholder engagement.

Throughout the programme, the selected intern will have the opportunity to work in a professional and multicultural environment, engage with practitioners and relevant stakeholders, and strengthen skills in communication, coordination, research, and organisation.

📌 Organise, summarise, and manage documents, emails, and invitations
📌 Prepare communication and public relations materials in Thai and English
📌 Support the organisation of meetings, events, and other activities
📌 Perform other assigned tasks

🎓 Who can apply?

📌 Thai Nationality
📌 3rd–4th year undergraduate students, recent graduates (within one year), or Master’s students in Political Science, International Relations, Law, Social Sciences, or related fields
📌 GPA of 3.00 or above
📌 Fluent in English (listening, speaking, reading, and writing)
📌 Good interpersonal and teamwork skills
📌 Strong interest in human rights, ASEAN affairs, or international relations
📌 Proficient in Microsoft Office and Canva
📌 Able to commit to the full six-month internship period

Protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples and protecting our environment are not separate agendas.

Thailand’s new law on the protection and promotion of ethnic ways of life is a crucial step—but it should be a starting point, not an endpoint. The next challenge is to turn recognition into meaningful participation, stronger protection, and a genuine role for communities in shaping how we manage our shared environment.

Ultimately, protecting the environment is about protecting the rights—and the future—of all of us.

11 August 2026 (Bangkok, Thailand) - At the Parliament, the Representative of Thailand to AICHR joined the panel “Indigenous Peoples and Ethnic Groups: From Global Trends to Thai Society,” held as part of the event on advancing the implementation of Thailand’s Protection and Promotion of the Ethnic Groups’ Way of Life Act, B.E. 2568 (2025).

The Representative of Thailand shared three main messages.

First, Indigenous Peoples are rights-holders, knowledge-holders, custodians of ecosystems, and essential partners in environmental governance. Indigenous knowledge cannot be meaningfully used while Indigenous Peoples are excluded from decisions affecting their lands, resources, cultures, and futures.

Second, ASEAN has made essential progress through the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment. The Declaration connects human rights with the triple planetary crisis and advances access to information, meaningful public participation, access to justice, non-discrimination, traditional knowledge, and a safe and enabling environment. ASEAN Leaders have also tasked AICHR, in consultation with ASOEN, with developing an ASEAN-owned and ASEAN-led Regional Plan of Action. Thailand is leading this process within AICHR.

This work complements the existing AICHR initiatives on Indigenous and traditional knowledge in responding and adapting to climate change. Together, these workstreams can help ASEAN connect recognition of Indigenous knowledge with protection of the people, communities, institutions, and ecosystems that sustain it.

Third, Thailand’s 2025 Act is a strong foundation for further progress. Its regional significance will ultimately depend on implementation, particularly whether it strengthens meaningful participation, gives practical effect to free, prior, and informed consent, promotes coherence with land and natural-resource laws, protects community and environmental defenders, and provides accessible remedies.

Thailand does not need to present the Act as a perfect model for others to copy. Thailand can demonstrate credible regional leadership by implementing it with communities, learning from the remaining challenges, and sharing those lessons through AICHR and other ASEAN bodies.

On ASEAN Day 2026, AICHR joins the peoples of Southeast Asia in commemorating the 59th anniversary of ASEAN.

“On this ASEAN Day, we are reminded that a truly resilient and rules-based ASEAN Community is one built on the human rights and dignity of all our ASEAN peoples. AICHR stands committed to walking this path together with ASEAN Member States, national institutions, and the region's vibrant civil society, in the shared pursuit of an ASEAN where human rights are not the exception, but the norm.”

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗼

The pollution affecting the Kok, Sai, Ruak and Mekong Rivers shows why transboundary environmental harm requires transboundary cooperation.

Efforts to strengthen cross-border technical cooperation are indeed needed. Joint monitoring, information-sharing and dialogue can help governments better understand the problem and build the basis for a common response.

But the scale of the challenge is clear that technical cooperation alone may not be sufficient.

The ASEAN Declaration on the 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗧𝗼 𝗔 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲, 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻, 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 calls for collective action, stronger cooperation and measures to prevent, control, reduce, mitigate and address environmental degradation.

A durable solution to the ongoing pollution requires us to look beyond the river itself and towards the activities that generate environmental risks upstream.

Governments can deepen engagement with all relevant economic partners, investors and businesses that have influence over upstream activities. They can promote higher environmental standards, responsible business conduct, human rights and environmental due diligence, cleaner production technologies, and effective remediation.

Where extractive activities remain an important source of local economic development, another part of the conversation should be how to create incentives for responsible investment and cleaner mining. Wider participation by companies that can meet stronger environmental and social standards could help demonstrate that economic development and environmental protection do not have to be competing choices.

At the same time, governments need credible monitoring, transparent information, meaningful participation by affected communities, and pathways towards protection and remedy.

Regional cooperation should therefore go beyond managing pollution downstream. It should also help prevent environmental harm at its source.

Shared rivers require shared responsibility. And meaningful cooperation must ultimately improve the health, livelihoods and environment of the people who depend on them.

As AICHR and relevant ASEAN bodies develop the Regional Plan of Action, the Kok, Sai, Ruak and Mekong Rivers offer an important lesson that ASEAN must turn cooperation into prevention, protection and better environmental outcomes on the ground.

The Representative of Thailand to AICHR paid a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) to discuss ways to strengthen collaboration on human rights issues that directly affect the well-being of people in Thailand and the region.

The discussion covered the rights of migrants, protection of children in the criminal justice process, transnational repression, environmental rights, and the protection of displaced persons, among others.

Both sides also agreed to deepen cooperation on Business and Human Rights, environmental rights, and Human Rights Cities.

On the environmental situation affecting the Kok, Sai, Ruak and Mekong Rivers, the NHRCT Chairperson encouraged AICHR to support efforts to advance environmental rights. The Representative of Thailand to AICHR highlighted the importance of visiting affected areas and engaging directly with communities on the ground to better understand the human rights impacts and inform practical responses.

AICHR Thailand looks forward to translating this cooperation into practical action that strengthens the promotion and protection of human rights on the ground.
