ประวัติวันวิสาขบูชา
วันวิสาขบูชา เป็นวันที่สมเด็จพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ประสูติ ตรัสรู้ และปรินิพพาน ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นในวันและเดือนเดียวกัน คือ ในวันเพ็ญ (ขึ้น ๑๕ ค่ำ) เดือนหก หรือเดือนเวสาขะ พระจันทร์เสวยวิสาขฤกษ์
เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวนี้ได้เกิดขึ้นเมื่อกว่าสองพันห้าร้อยปีมาแล้ว ในห้วงระยะเวลาที่ต่างกันคือ
ครั้งแรก เมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าประสูติเป็นเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ โอรสพระเจ้าสุทโธธนะ และ พระนาง สิริมหามายาแห่งกรุงกบิลพัสดุ์ โดยประสูติที่ป่าลุมพินีวัน ณ เขตแดนรอยต่อระหว่างกรุงกบิลพัสดุ์ของฝ่ายพระราชบิดากับกรุงเทวทหะของฝ่ายพระราชมารดา
ครั้งที่สอง เกิดเมื่อเจ้าชายสิทธัตถะ ออกทรงผนวชได้ ๖ ปี พระชนมายุ ๓๕ พรรษา ได้ตรัสรู้พระอนุตรสัมมาสัมโพธิญาณ เป็นอรหันตพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ณ ริ่มฝั่งแม่น้ำเนรัญชรา
ประเทศมคธปัจจุบันคือที่ตั้งพุทธคยา
ครั้งที่สาม เกิดเมื่อพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า เสด็จดับขันธ ปรินิพพาน เมื่อพระชนมายุ ๘๐ พรรษา ณ เมืองกุสินารา
เหตุการณ์สำคัญทั้งสามประการนี้ เกิดขึ้นในวันและเดือนเดียวกัน ทางจันทรคติ ซึ่งนับวันขึ้นแรม ตามวิถีการโคจรของดวงจันทร์ เป็นหลักในการกำหนดวัน เดือนและปีซึ่งยังคงใช้กันมาอยู่จนถึงทุกวันนี้ ควบคู่กันไปกับการกำหนดวัน เดือน และปีทางสุริยคติ ซึ่งเป็นไปตามวิถีการโคจรของดวงอาทิตย์ นับเป็นเรื่องอัศจรรย์ซึ่งยังไม่เคยมีการประจวบกันเช่นนี้แก่ผู้หนึ่งผู้ใด และเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเหตุการณ์ใดมาก่อนจนตราบเท่าปัจจุบันแต่ความอัศจรรย์ดังกล่าว ก็ยังไม่เทียบเท่ากับการอุบัติของพระอรหันตสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าขึ้นมาในโลก และได้ทรงประดิษฐานพระพุทธศาสนาเพื่ออนุเคราะห์โลกให้เกิดประโยชน์สุขแก่มนุษยชาติและสัตว์โลกทั้งมวลวันวิสาขบูชาจึงนับว่าเป็นวันสำคัญสูงสุดในพระพุทธศาสนา เป็นวันที่ก่อให้เกิดพระพุทธเจ้า ผู้ตรัสรู้พระธรรมและนำมาสั่งสอนแก่สรรพสัตว์ และพระสงฆ์สาวกผู้สืบพระศาสนาต่อมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

Visakha Bucha Day is the day on which the Lord Buddha—the Fully Enlightened One (the Arahant Sammāsambuddha)—was born, attained Enlightenment, and passed into Parinirvana. Remarkably, all three events occurred on the same day and month: the full moon day (the 15th day of the waxing moon) of the sixth lunar month, known as the month of Vesakha, under the Visakha constellation.
These significant events took place more than 2,500 years ago, though at different times in His life:
• The first event was the birth of the Buddha as Prince Siddhartha, the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Sirimahamaya of Kapilavastu. He was born in Lumbini Park, located on the border between Kapilavastu (his father’s kingdom) and Devadaha (his mother’s homeland).
• The second event occurred when Prince Siddhartha, after renouncing worldly life and practicing asceticism for six years, attained Supreme Enlightenment at the age of 35. He became the Fully Enlightened Buddha at the bank of the Neranjara River, in the Magadha Kingdom—present-day Bodh Gaya.
• The third event took place when the Buddha passed away into Parinirvana at the age of 80 in Kusinara.
These three major events all occurred on the same day and month according to the lunar calendar, which is based on the phases and orbit of the moon and has long been used to determine dates, months, and years. This system continues to be used alongside the solar calendar, which is based on the movement of the sun.
Such a coincidence—three monumental events in the life of one individual occurring on the same lunar day and month—is considered extraordinary and unparalleled in history. However, even this remarkable concurrence is not as profound as the arising of the Fully Enlightened Buddha in the world. Through His Enlightenment, He established Buddhism for the benefit and happiness of humanity and all living beings.
Therefore, Visakha Bucha Day is regarded as the most important day in Buddhism. It commemorates the birth of the Buddha, His realization of the Dhamma, and the continuation of His teachings through the Sangha, which has been preserved and passed down to the present day...................................................................
