Statement to the Public Regarding the People's Assembly Elections
Today in the city of Hasakah, representatives for Hasakah Governorate were chosen for the People's Assembly through what are called "electoral bodies." These bodies were appointed according to unfair criteria and interests aligned with the government in Damascus, and on undemocratic grounds that do not reflect the political and demographic diversity of the governorate. Those appointed today do not include any members of the Syriac-Assyrian people or Christians in general. This constitutes an injustice against an integral component of the region, one that has a presence, representation, and role, particularly through its participation in the Syrian revolution via its political forces, including our party, the Syriac Union Party.
In the face of these exclusionary measures, which were not even implemented under the dictatorial rule of Assad, we affirm and demand fair representation for our people through the one-third of seats to be allocated by the President of the Republic. This includes allocating at least two seats from the Hasakah Governorate, and ensuring that the representation of Christians in Syria as a whole is no less than 10%. This measure aims to guarantee respect for this community, which has always contributed, along with all other communities, to building and developing its country.
This is especially crucial at this juncture in Syria's history, when our people feel marginalized and see no future for themselves in this transitional phase. This phase must be founded on guaranteeing and strengthening national and religious pluralism, and on coexistence within a unified homeland. It must also guarantee full and equal rights under a democratic constitution based on human rights charters and the will of the Syrian people to shape their future in Syria.
