The National Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk, on Monday warmly welcomed back South Sudan’s National Handball Team following their participation in the African National Handball Tournament held in Ethiopia.

Hon. Atong expressed her appreciation and gratitude to the team for representing the country with commitment and determination. She encouraged the players to continue working hard, emphasizing that dedication and discipline create greater opportunities for growth, progress, and success.

While receiving the players with warmth and encouragement, the Minister called upon the youth of South Sudan to continue embracing the spirit of unity. She stressed that no nation can prosper without unity, peace, and cooperation among its people. According to Hon. Atong, sports remain a powerful platform for promoting peace, bringing people together, and strengthening national cohesion.

The Minister also commended the coaches for their outstanding efforts and dedication in mentoring and training young athletes. She encouraged them to remain committed to equipping the youth with valuable sporting and life skills that will contribute positively to the development of the country.

Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Atong Kuol Manyang Juuk, attended and graced the South Sudan Final Cup match between El Merreikh Bentiu and Al Ghazala Wau at the Juba National Stadium.

During the highly attended final, Hon. Atong Kuol emphasized the important role sports play in promoting peace, unity, reconciliation, and social cohesion across the country. She encouraged young people to embrace sports as a platform for showcasing talent, building discipline, and strengthening national unity.

The event attracted thousands of South Sudanese citizens who gathered at the national stadium in a vibrant atmosphere filled with chants, music, dancing, and celebration of sportsmanship. Also in attendance were several government officials, including the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Finance, Hon. Malual Top.

Minister Atong Kuol arrived at the stadium with great enthusiasm and expressed appreciation for seeing citizens united through the spirit of sports. In her remarks, she reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the growth of sports in South Sudan, noting that sports not only foster unity and peace but also promote the image of the country at the regional and international level.

The final match ended 2–1 in favor of El Merreikh Bentiu, who emerged as the champions of the tournament.

Earlier today, I convened a briefing meeting with the Undersecretary and the Ministry’s senior management team. During this engagement, the Undersecretary provided comprehensive updates on ongoing and planned activities, including key projects supported by various development partners.

Members of the senior management team comprising the Undersecretary, Director Generals, and Directors also highlighted the Ministry’s principal achievements. In addition, they outlined the challenges currently facing the institution and engaged in constructive discussions on practical pathways to strengthen performance and enhance service delivery.

As part of my introductory engagements, I conducted a tour of the Ministry, visiting various offices and interacting with staff. This provided valuable insights into the working environment and underscored a strong commitment to accountability, teamwork, and transparency.

This approach reflects a deliberate effort to gain a thorough understanding of the institution prior to full operational engagement, while fostering a positive foundation for collaboration, cohesion, and sustained progress within the Ministry.

Mary Nawai Martin, Minister of Youth and Sports and member of the SPLM National Liberation Council (NLC), the Party’s legislative body, attended and celebrated the oath-taking ceremony of the newly appointed SPLM 1st Deputy Chairman, Cde. Dr. Prof. James Wani Igga, and SPLM Secretary-General, Cde. Dr. Akol Paul Kordit, held today at SPLM House, Juba.

Cde. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, SPLM Chairman, urged party leadership and members to remain united and focus on preparing the country for the 2026 general elections, in which SPLM will seek a fresh mandate from the people of South Sudan, building on its historical commitment since the 2010 general elections.

Minister of Youth and Sports Meets Indian Ambassador to Strengthen Youth Development Cooperation.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mary Nawai Martin, held a fruitful meeting with the Ambassador of India to South Sudan, during which they discussed key areas of collaboration aimed at empowering young people through capacity building, rehabilitation programs, sports development, and modern agricultural initiatives.

Hon. Nawai appreciated the Ambassador for India’s continued support toward youth empowerment and development. The Ambassador reaffirmed India’s commitment to sponsor 15 South Sudanese youth for training programs in India, with the Ministry of Youth and Sports responsible for coordinating and identifying beneficiaries.

The Ambassador further expressed India’s readiness to support sports development by engaging professional coaches and specialists to train youth in South Sudan and facilitate advanced training opportunities in India. Additionally, India will consider providing 15 computers to enhance youth skills development, proposal writing, and project implementation.

Both parties agreed to continue collaboration on youth policy training, sports development, and other initiatives that promote the growth, innovation, and inclusion of South Sudanese youth.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mary Nawai Martin, held a consultative meeting with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to discuss outstanding legislative bills, including the Youth and Sports Development Bill and the Youth Enterprise Bill. The Minister of Justice confirmed that both Bills are ready to be presented to the Council of Ministers upon its resumption. The two Ministers also discussed collaboration on youth capacity-building initiatives and sports development programs aimed at engaging young people productively and promoting their active participation in nation-building.

UNICEF South Sudan Country Representative Pays Courtesy Visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mary Nawai Martin, received a delegation from UNICEF South Sudan led by the Country Representative, Mrs. Noala Skinner, at the Ministry’s headquarters.

The Minister of Youth and Sports held a productive meeting with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to discuss ongoing and prospective partnerships in the areas of agribusiness, youth capacity building, and the establishment of a national youth center.

During the discussions, the Minister highlighted the challenges faced by young people across the country and emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces where youth can engage, learn, and find support in times of stress. She expressed sincere appreciation to H.E. the President for the continued trust and support extended to her leadership.

The Minister also shared plans to construct a major national stadium, which will be named in honor of the President as a symbol of national pride and unity.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, pledging to offer scholarships, training opportunities, and technical support. Minister of Youth and Sports Meets UNESCO Country Representative to Enhance Cooperation in Youth Empowerment and Sports Development.

The Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of South Sudan, Hon. Mary Nawai Martin, held a meeting in her office with Ms. Yayoi Segi-Vltchek, UNESCO Country Representative to South Sudan, who was accompanied by Hon. Awut Mayom Agok, former Minister of General Education and Instruction for Warrap State and the current Interim Secretary-General of the UNESCO South Sudan National Commission.

Hon. Nawai expressed her sincere appreciation to UNESCO for its continued support to the youth of South Sudan through educational programs, capacity-building initiatives, and peacebuilding and sports development activities. She particularly acknowledged UNESCO’s role in sponsoring the establishment of the National Compliance Platform South Sudan for Anti-Doping in Sports, a key milestone in promoting integrity and fair play within the national sports sector.

The Minister further briefed the delegation on the Government’s ongoing efforts to advance the Anti-Doping in Sports Bill, which is expected to be tabled before the National Legislative Assembly. She emphasized that the proposed law will strengthen South Sudan’s commitment to clean sport and ensure compliance with international standards to protect the integrity of athletics and sporting activities in the country.

In response, Ms. Segi-Vltchek reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to continued collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Government of South Sudan, particularly in empowering young people, enhancing sports governance, and fostering education and peace-building initiatives across the nation.

Minister of Youth and Sports Briefs H.E. Mama Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, Vice President and Chair of Gender & Youth Cluster, on South Sudan’s Participation in the Tenth Session of the Conference of Parties to the International Convention Against Doping in Sport

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Mary Nawai Martin, today briefed Her Excellency Mama Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan and Chair of the Gender & Youth Cluster, on South Sudan’s participation in the Tenth Session of the Conference of Parties (COP10) to the International Convention Against Doping in Sport.

The meeting reaffirmed South Sudan’s unwavering commitment to promoting clean sport and upholding the highest ethical standards in athletic activities, both nationally and internationally.

During the briefing, Hon. Nawai highlighted the key discussions and outcomes from COP10, which recently concluded. She underscored South Sudan’s ongoing efforts in the fight against doping in sport, including compliance with the Convention’s obligations, the establishment of the National Anti-Doping Agency of South Sudan, the development of an Anti-Doping Bill, and the implementation of education and awareness programs for athletes and support personnel. She also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in strengthening anti-doping mechanisms and promoting integrity in sport.

Hon. Nawai reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to aligning South Sudan’s national sports policies with the provisions of the UNESCO International Convention Against Doping in Sport, to which South Sudan became a State Party on 11 August 2023.

Her Excellency, Vice President Mama Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its proactive engagement and strong representation at the conference. She emphasized the need for continued collaboration with international partners such as UNESCO and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to enhance institutional capacity and implement effective anti-doping measures in the country.

Her Excellency further reaffirmed her leadership’s support for programs that promote fair play, protect the health and wellbeing of athletes, and inspire future generations of South Sudanese sportsmen and women.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports remains steadfast in its commitment to developing and implementing comprehensive anti-doping programs and establishing a fully functional National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) in line with international standards.
