To: Hon. Minister Dr. Joseph Geng Akech,
Minister of Youth, Culture, and Sport
I (We) share a profound gratitude and appreciation for the collective effort that led to Malieth Dak Deng's inclusion among the fans travelling to Paris for the Olympics. I thank the media outlets, groups, and individuals who reposted and shared the post. You are all legends, but Minister Dr. Joseph Geng Deng, your role in this collective effort is particularly noteworthy. This campaign was not just about Malieth as an individual but a powerful symbol of our shared South Sudanese pride and our collective dream of positive achievements that can elevate our nation's reputation. Although he will not play, imagine if LeBron James or any other US superstar were to see the true giant of the Nile.
They would indeed have newfound respect and admiration for the people of South Sudan. We are a proud people with immense potential to promote our national identity, and showcasing these attributes on the global stage in a coordinated manner will undoubtedly benefit South Sudan.
In every life, there are doubting Thomases. Why Malieth and not other tall people? I have a simple answer for those people: the need here is the symbolism, and this marketing strategy would open ways to potential opportunities. Only four years ago, less positive South Sudanese stories made it to the media arena besides the political situation. Known to South Sudan was the story of who was killed and which area faced a food crisis. Knowing that fewer South Sudanese can travel worldwide due to visa conditions or other issues like the economy, it would be good if we all capitalise on the vocal support of the team that has made it internationally.
As I said in my previous letter, claiming our position on the world stage requires a multifaceted approach. Different aspects include the political sphere, art, music, culture, and sports. Luol Ajou Deng Akuei has played a significant role by bringing together many young people, including those born outside South Sudan, who cherish their heritage. During our time as part of the United Sudan, Manute Bol showcased the excellence of the South Sudanese people, particularly his basketball skills and our impressive average height, which is unmatched globally. He continued to represent us on the world stage, as did Guor Marial, who carried the Olympic flag when South Sudan had not participated in the World Games.
In Australia, for example, many South Sudanese proudly display the flag of South Sudan in their adopted country while participating in soccer, AFL, rugby, basketball, and running. These individuals are representatives of their homeland and can serve as mentors and role models for others in their new community. South Sudan has also made a mark in the modelling industry and other spaces with figures like Alek Wek, Adut Akech, Anok Yai, and many others. Nonpolitical events that have tangible effects can significantly benefit our country. For instance, the sight of Malieth Dak Deng during the football match between Sudan and South Sudan was a powerful reminder of how local attraction can be projected globally.
Thank you and the President for your tireless efforts. For those who may wonder what brings the President into this, he is the employer of Dr. Joseph Geng Deng. Often, the Government is criticised for its missteps, but less recognition is given for its positive actions. This is a momentous occasion as it marks the first Olympics in which South Sudan will participate, a moment many of us eagerly anticipate. The symbolism of this participation is profound. For example, it was a dream come true in Australia to see South Sudanese basketball players competing against Australians.
Honourable Minister, South Sudan is a treasure trove of unique potential despite our limited resources. Our vibrant culture, rich traditions, and numerous attractions are local assets and global treasures waiting to be discovered. Our collective responsibility, whether within the Government or beyond, is to amplify these blessings, fostering a sense of hope and optimism for our future global recognition.
I thank many South Sudanese journalists, media outlets, and social media groups who have voiced their support, all advocating for a positive portrayal of South Sudan. The Honourable Minister's role in achieving this through your esteemed office is commendable and crucial for our nation's global image.
Note: I have yet to officially communicate with the Ministry or the Minister, except for the press release on the Ministry page confirming the inclusion of Malieth Dak Deng.
Thank you for your continued support and dedication.
Sincerely,
Ajak Deng Chiengkou
