Juba, April 21st, 2026 — The Office of the National Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomurö, today hosted an oath-taking ceremony for two medical doctors appointed to the South Sudan General Medical Council, reaffirming government commitment to strengthening oversight and professionalism in the health sector.
The two officials, sworn in at the Minister’s office, assumed roles as a member of the council and Registrar of the newly constituted body. Dr. Atong Longar Ayuel was sworn in as a Council Member, while Dr. Margaret Betty Ayoba assumed the position of Registrar. Both took oaths of office and professional conduct, pledging to uphold the highest standards of medical ethics and service.
During the meeting, the delegation of the Medical Council, led by Chairperson Prof. Dr. Rose Ajak Costa, briefed the Minister on the council’s planned activities. These include a nationwide inspection of health facilities and health training institutions to ensure compliance with established standards and regulations. Institutions that meet the required criteria will continue operations, while those that fall short will face closure or be advised to undertake corrective measures.
The council further informed the Minister of its decision to roll out new certificates of registration beginning early next week. Medical practitioners have been urged to update their registration through the council’s online platform, as the current certificates will become invalid effective May 1st, 2026.
Additionally, the council will require all foreign medical practitioners operating in South Sudan to present themselves for registration and submit authentic documentation. Their credentials will be verified through established partnerships with DataFlow and Epex to ensure credibility and compliance with national standards.
In his remarks, Dr. Lomurö directed all medical professionals to uphold the principles of medical ethics and integrity in their practice. He reiterated the government’s commitment to working closely with the council to ensure the effective implementation of its mandate, noting that the Ministry remains the competent authority overseeing the operations of the Medical Council.
The Minister emphasized that these efforts are part of broader government reforms aimed at ensuring quality, accountability, and public trust in the delivery of healthcare services across the country.
