WEEKLY FOLLOW-UP UPDATE: CHOLERA AND MPOX OUTBREAKS
The National Public Health Institute (NPHI) has confirmed that cholera and Mpox outbreaks remain ongoing in the country. The steering committee has identified Jonglei and Lakes States as the primary hotspot areas experiencing a resurgence of cholera cases.
In a statement to the media on Thursday, NPHI Executive Director Dr. Kediende Chong provided updated figures: More than 4,000 cumulative cases of cholera have been recorded across the affected counties between January 2026 and March 2026.
"The displacement of populations has significantly exacerbated the spread of disease. Affected communities face severe limitations in access to health facilities, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. The reliance on direct water collection from rivers poses a major challenge to preventing transmission," Dr. Chong highlighted.
The NPHI is currently conducting targeted oral cholera vaccination (OCV) campaigns.
Dr. Chong urged the public to take full protective measures against cholera and Mpox and to adhere strictly to the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute.
Partner organizations are collaborating with the NPHI to intensify efforts aimed at protecting the public from the ongoing cholera and Mpox threats.
