Before we ask someone to speak, how do we help them arrive?
On 26 August, Chat Circles officially launched at grovve , *SCAPE. Bringing youths and volunteer Listeners together for meaningful one-to-one conversations.
As Chat Circles’ mindfulness and outreach partner, Hush TeaBar opened the experience with a short Deaf-led grounding practice.
Through simple SgSL emotion signs, reflection and mindful breathing, participants were invited to pause, notice how they were feeling, and settle into the space before entering their conversations.
One reflection from the evening stayed with us. Although the surrounding environment was busy and at times noisy, participants shared that the grounding helped them slow down, become more present and focus more deeply on the person sitting across from them.
That is what this moment was designed for.
Not to teach sign language as a standalone activity.
Not to tell anyone what they should share.
But to create a pause before the words begin.
Pause. Check in. Sign. Breathe. Connect.
Chat Circles is led by Empact, in partnership with Hush TeaBar and The School of Positive Psychology (TSPP), supported by CapitaLand Hope Foundation and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth - MCCY, and is part of the SG Youth Plan.
We were also honoured to have SPS Goh Hanyan join us as Guest of Honour for the launch.
A heartfelt thank you to the teams who made this possible - Keng Hwee, Joey and Fad from Empact; Jana and Stephan from TSPP; and Anthea Ong, Reshiivarma Valamuthu, Low Kok Wah and Lewis from Hush TeaBar.
A special appreciation to Kok Wah, our Lead Deaf Facilitator, for leading the grounding with calm and presence, and to every Chatter and Listener who entered the space willing to listen, share and connect.
This is only the beginning. We look forward to continuing to refine the grounding experience as Chat Circles reaches more communities.
💬 Sometimes meaningful conversation does not begin with the perfect question. Sometimes, it begins with a pause.
