COMMUNITY MONITORING GROUP TRAINING UNDERWAY AT THREE PROJECT SITES

The Western Provincial Government Planning Team is currently conducting Community Monitoring Group (CMG) Training at three project sites in Western Province β€” Buri Community High School (CHS), RC Nicholson College and Goldie College.

The training is aimed at equipping CMG members with the knowledge and skills to monitor project implementation, track progress and ensure that projects are completed according to the agreed scope, standards and timelines.

Community Monitoring Groups play an important role in the project implementation process. While Provincial Government officers provide technical guidance and oversight, they cannot always be physically present at project sites throughout the implementation period. Having a trained CMG at each site therefore provides an important community-based monitoring mechanism, allowing communities and institutions to be directly involved in following the progress of their projects and providing timely updates.

THREE PROJECT SITES
The current CMG training is being conducted for the following projects:
πŸ“ Monday – Buri CHS
πŸ“ Tuesday – RC Nicholson College
πŸ“ Wednesday – Goldie College

Each of these institutions will receive rainwater catchment tanks, providing a reliable source of good and clean drinking water for students and staff.
πŸ’§ Buri CHS – Rainwater Catchment Tank fully funded by LoCAL
πŸ’§ Goldie College – Rainwater Catchment Tank fully funded by LoCAL
πŸ’§ RC Nicholson College – Water Catchment Tank co-funded by LoCAL and IEDCR

Both programmes are channeled through the Provincial Capacity Development Fund (PCDF).

The CMG approach strengthens this process by ensuring that the beneficiary communities and institutions have a direct role in monitoring the projects being implemented for them.

This is more than simply constructing water tanks. It is about ensuring that the investment is properly implemented, monitored and ultimately delivers a lasting benefit to the students, teachers and communities who will use it.

The Planning Team acknowledges the commitment of the CMG members, school administrations and communities participating in this important training.

GROUND BREAKING FOR GIZO ROAD EMERGENT WORKS AND SPOT REHABILITATION
Gizo, Western Province – 20 August 2026

The much-anticipated improvement of key sections of the Gizo Road has taken an important step forward today with the official ground-breaking for the Gizo Road Emergent Works and Spot Rehabilitation Project.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) has awarded the contract for the emergent works and spot rehabilitation of key sections of the Gizo Road to JED Enterprise, responding to the long-standing concerns of Gizo residents over the deteriorating condition of the town's main road. The original scope was planned to cover the section from the SDA Church/Gizo Primary School, through JFK Stadium, Mid-West and towards CFC Junction.
However, following discussions between the contractor, MID and the Western Provincial Government, it was agreed that the immediate works would instead focus on the front road section from Gizo Market through to PT109 and then towards CFC Junction. This adjustment is intended to ensure that the most urgent sections of the road receive attention as soon as possible. The contractor has agreed to undertake the works on the basis that some gravel will be provided free of charge, a request the Western Provincial Government has accepted given the urgent need to improve Gizo's road infrastructure.
The ground-breaking ceremony was witnessed by members of the public, marking the beginning of what is expected to be an important improvement to road access, mobility and safety within Gizo.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Works for the Western Provincial Government, Hon. Freedom Tozaka, highlighted the importance of the project and the concerns raised by the people of Gizo.
β€œGizo Roads is one of the cries of the residents of Gizo. Finally, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has adhered to our request.”
The Minister acknowledged that the condition of Gizo's roads has been a persistent concern for residents, businesses and the wider community. He welcomed the response from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and emphasised the importance of continued collaboration between the National Government and the Western Provincial Government to address infrastructure needs in the province.
Hon. Tozaka also highlighted the Western Provincial Government's commitment to strengthening its own capacity to maintain provincial infrastructure. He assured the public that the current Western Provincial Government is working towards ensuring that Own Source Revenue (OSR) can contribute to road maintenance in the future.
This is an important direction for the province, as it would enable the Western Provincial Government to allocate part of its own revenue towards maintaining roads and other essential infrastructure, reducing the province's dependence on the National Government and development partners for road maintenance.
The emergent works will commence shortly and are expected to provide much-needed rehabilitation to the identified sections of the Gizo Road.
Importantly, the current emergent works should not be viewed as a replacement for the planned CAUSE Project II intervention. CAUSE Project II is expected to undertake further works on the relevant section of the Gizo Road once all necessary formalities and preparations have been completed. The project documentation notes that CAUSE Project II will still cover the section once its formalities are completed.
The Western Provincial Government welcomes the commencement of the emergent works as an immediate response to the concerns of Gizo residents, while continuing to look forward to the larger intervention through CAUSE Project II.
The ground-breaking therefore represents more than the commencement of road worksβ€”it is a significant step towards improving Gizo's urban infrastructure and demonstrates the importance of continued advocacy, partnership and collaboration between the Provincial Government, National Government, development partners, contractors and the people of Western Province.
For the people of Gizo, the message is clear: the work to improve Gizo's roads has begun.
