Rwanda has come a long way since its very dark past, and there is no better proof than the Genocide Memorial Centre in Kigali. The Centre includes three permanent exhibits, documenting the 1994 Genocide and the history of genocides around the world. The heart-breaking testimonials and images have drawn thousands of survivors to pay their respects to the fallen. Much like South Africa’s Apartheid Museum, the Genocide Centre has become a powerful movement towards knowledge and understanding of the causes and effects of genocide, and the condemnation of senseless violence in any form. Other historical places of interest include the Presidential Palace Museum in Kanombe that offers a glimpse into the life of an African dictator before 1994. A guided tour will cost you around Rwf 6000, and you’ll be able to view a fascinating display of traditional Rwandan clothing as well. Kigali is, unfortunately, quite expensive, and you probably won’t be stuffing your bags with unnecessary purchases. Do pick up some locally made handicrafts and clothing, however. Coffee beans, tea leaves and honey make wonderful gifts, and are of excellent quality if you avoid the cheapest brands. The fastest way to get around Kigali is by moto (motorcycle taxi) but matatus (minibus taxis) remain the most popular for locals. Most of the minibuses are well maintained, and very affordable to use. Sedan taxis are also available, but they’re very expensive by comparison, and you’ll probably be better off renting a car.
