Meeting regarding Breeding Policy for Rural Poultry Breeds – Poultry Research Institute,
A meeting of the Expert Committee constituted by the Directorate of Poultry Research Institute (PRI), Rawalpindi, was held on Friday, 28th November 2025 at PRI, Rawalpindi. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Farhan Afzal (Director, PRI), participant from academia was Zaib ur Rehman (Poultry Science Department, PMAS Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi), representative of private sector was Dr. Muhammad Javed, Dr. Shafique ur Rehman (DICO Multan, via online link), Dr. Aamir Sharif (Poultry Development Officer OPS, GPF Bahawalpur), Dr. Akbar Ali (Senior Veterinary Officer, PRI Rawalpindi), and Dr. Abida Parveen (Senior Veterinary Officer, PRI Rawalpindi).
The purpose of the meeting was to focus on key technical and developmental matters related to the improvement of poultry production systems across Punjab.
This meeting aimed to discuss important agenda items related to improving backyard poultry and government poultry farm management. Key points of this meeting include:
✅ Developing a 5-year rearing & breeding plan for Backyard Poultry
✅ Introducing new blood lines to prevent inbreeding
✅ Improving health management and SOPs
✅ Formulating flock size & biosecurity guidelines
✅ Setting culling policy for Government Poultry Farms
✅ Examining male-to-female ratios
✅ Developing breed crosses (up to F1/F2)
✅ Describing back-crossing to maintain blood lines
✅ Creating farm-wise rearing plans
✅ Proposing nutrition, feed, and water analysis protocols
✅ Discussing any additional issues raised by committee members
PRI is planning to take strong steps toward enhancing rural poultry development, genetic improvement, and farm management at Govt Poultry farms across Punjab.
