Training-cum-Exposure Visit of Farmers of District Kurram
Under AIP Project on Virus-Free Seed Potato Production
Under the AIP Project on Virus-Free Seed Potato Production for the higher-altitude districts of Kurram and Orakzai, a three-day training-cum-exposure visit for farmers of District Kurram was successfully conducted at Sahiwal, Punjab. The activity was organized by the Directorate of Agriculture Research (Merged Districts), Peshawar, in collaboration with the Agriculture Research Sub-Station, District Kurram, with the objective of enhancing farmers’ technical capacity and providing practical exposure to modern seed potato production technologies.
A total of 30 farmers from District Kurram participated in the event. The participants were trained by scientific officers of the Potato Research Centre, Sahiwal, who delivered comprehensive technical sessions on improved potato seed production practices, varietal selection, disease and pest management, and quality control measures essential for virus-free seed potato production.
During the exposure component of the visit, the farmers were taken to the potato research fields of the Potato Research Centre, Sahiwal. Approximately 350 potato varieties under different stages of research and evaluation were observed for their suitability for seed potato production. The farmers gained firsthand knowledge of advanced research techniques, varietal performance, and field management practices being adopted at the research station.
The participating farmers expressed their satisfaction and highly appreciated the efforts of the Directorate of Agriculture Research (Merged Districts), Peshawar, and the Agriculture Research Sub-Station, District Kurram, for organizing this informative and capacity-building activity. The training-cum-exposure visit is expected to play a significant role in promoting the adoption of virus-free seed potato production technologies in the higher-altitude areas of District Kurram and Orakzai.
