International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed annually on December 3rd. It was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly to promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
Gender-based violence (GBV) significantly affects individuals with disabilities, often in unique and compounded ways. Persons with disabilities, especially women and girls, are disproportionately vulnerable to GBV due to societal stigmas, dependence on caregivers, and systemic inequalities.

Today marks International Day of the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the start of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence—a global campaign to raise awareness and drive action to end gender-based violence (GBV). GBV remains a critical human rights violation and public health crisis, perpetuating gender inequality and posing significant barriers for survivors seeking quality care, support, and the full realization of their rights.

The epidemic of violence against women and girls shames humanity.

Every day, on average, 140 women and girls are killed by someone in their own family.

Around one in three women experience physical or sexual violence.

No country or community is unaffected. And the situation is getting worse. 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence is an opportunity to highlight these issues and violence against women.

The 16 Days of Activism is a call to action, a time to amplify the voices of survivors, and a moment to unite across borders, cultures, and communities. From November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to December 10th, Human Rights Day, this period serves as a reminder that violence against women and girls is not just a violation of human rights, but a global epidemic that must be eradicated.

In these 16 days, we stand together to say no more to violence, exploitation, and abuse. We recognize the strength, resilience, and courage of survivors, while acknowledging that the fight is far from over.
